Yes sir, this next week is going to be a test run. We’re headed out deer hunting and taking all of the dogs N horses so we don’t need to pay a person to feed.
I’m going to take the kids out on some short rides through the meadows around camp to introduce them to riding in the mountains.

Made it home at 12:25 last night , had an amazing adventure with great friends! Drove the 18 hour drive straight through yesterday but on the way down I stopped somewhere south of Moab Utah and slept a few hours, I woke up around 5am to a critter making a sound very near me that I was unfamiliar with and it soon turned into 3 of them calling to each other as they got closer and closer. A very loud hoot owl seemed to be encouraging them and the whole thing was very creepy  we caught lots of bears got out ran by a few, and walked and bayed a jumbo all day one day. Got into 20 yards at one point and it was very unnerving being in thick oak brush that close and still not being able to see him just hear him growling. After a 9 mile hike just had to pull the dogs he wasn’t going to climb. A friend of my buddies did all the cooking in Dutch ovens and it was fantastic! At some points he would have 5 going at one time! Caught a bobcat first thing Saturday morning which was just icing on the cake! That afternoon we found a big Tom lion track fresh so they were trying to catch him yesterday but I figured better head for the house…already can’t wait for next year!

It really was an absolute blast and a much needed break from work! Rifle season started here today but we didn’t get home from the last of the boys football games until the wee hours, his bus didn’t get back until 345am. They played their best game of the season but still lost. He’s excited for some hunting and wrestling season to start. 35 days till lion and bobcat season starts so this is our favorite time of year!…well I could do without the mountains being crawling with people everywhere you look! I read an article yesterday that said even though the big game combination tags (deer and elk) are capped at 17k for non resident hunters that the sold 86k nonresident hunting licenses due to nonresident being able to buy over the counter doe/cow tags in some regions. It’s just crazy how many people flood to our mountains every hunting season. We aren’t setting a camp where we normally do because I’m sure last night was no different that the last few years, a nonstop parade of camp trailers until 2 or 3 in the morning, and that’s no exaggeration.

Wow that’s crazy. I’m glad you had a good time though. Deer season is in here, well bow season. It puts a stop to our hunting pretty much until just after the first of the year. I’ve never understood why the season is that long. If you can’t kill a dang goat in a month then you don’t need too.

Howdy gentlemen! I’ve been so stinkin busy, it ain’t funny.

Good to hear you had a great time in NM, Joe!
Hope you guys are able to find a honey hole or two and fill all your tags!

Law, how’s your Fall going?

As for me, if I’m not at work then I’ve been working at home. I work on my truck or dog kennels, trying to get them done before it gets too cold to work outside all day. This week I had to replace the flywheel on my truck because the starter stuck and chewed it up.

My kennels are about 30% done. I have part of the wall built, 5 dog houses built and 4of the kennels have dogs in them now. I’m getting it permitted so I have to finish framing the wall and then install all of the electrical outlets and the water line then call the inspector before I insulate it and put the siding on.

I will make a video when I’m done and put it on YouTube.

Sounds like a nice kennel Rowdy.

Our fall is slowing down fast because of deer season. We made a run yesterday. The first two we caught were solo boars laid up by themselves. They weren’t trophies but they were hogs. My Ava gyp and her son Ray relayed after the first one. They crossed the slough he was bedded by and went about a mile south and ended up about 600 yards to our east. When we got there they were bayed across the river and I’m sure he heard and smelled us, the wind was blowing right to him. He tries to break across open ground and they had him stopped. I guess he was feeling pretty exposed and broke back to the river. They had him bayed again at 5-600 yards up the river. We called the land owner over there he told us to get after it. Two of our crew crossed and I sent my catch dog across to them and they dispatched him. We load up and cast again in another area. This time it’s a sounder and hogs go everywhere. My Outlaw dog snagged one sow and the other dogs snagged another. We got those taken care of quick and the dogs relayed. Ava stopped a sow about 100 yards from the buggy and we took care of her then went to the other one that the other dogs had caught. They all relayed and caught another one and then relayed again and caught the last one in the river. I think it was eight total. The last six were fast and furious, probably within about a 30 minute time frame. Pretty uniform hogs, about 100-150 pounds each. It was a fun hunt with good people for sure.

Man that sounds awesome, Law! I sure miss hog hunting. It’s pure action and lion hunting just doesn’t compare lol. But lions have a draw that hogs don’t have.

I get it. There’s something real majestic about those big cats and they be one of the most beautiful creatures there are.

Sounds like you guys are all having too much fun in the woods, except Rowdy who’s always working  . I went to the terrier trials last weekend in Texas, my main reason for going was to test a couple young dogs I have.

First is my male jagd, he’s a painfully slow starter except when it comes to armadillos, well he flipped the switch and bayed the hair off a couple of boars there. He’s a tightly wound spring of a dog, he got right up to them but never got a scratch when they charged at him. I wish I had those reflexes, also he put teeth on them when they broke and ran too. Now I think I have something I can work with.

The second dog is my female heideterrier that’s 16 months old, I put her in the bay pen for a practice run with my male jagd. A young boar about 130lb comes out of the chute and my male gets after him, the female is bouncing around trying to figure out what she’s looking at. When that young hog broke to run she clicked into action and stopped him quick. The young boar gave her a pop in the mouth and broke again, she was in hot pursuit, and caught him on the cheek, planted her front feet and stopped him there with my male bringing up the caboose.

Came home for a couple days then went to south Texas for a couple days, we hunted a couple ranches and only got one short race that I think was a sounder. They ran through a black brush thicket and the dogs all scattered and filtered back. It was darned hot that day. The owner of that ranch had purchased some of those genetic freak whitetail bucks. I think we’ve all seen nice big bucks, but I’m here to tell you these were on another level. He must’ve shelled out some serious coin for those bucks. It was a pleasure just to see them.
