Re: Let’s talk.
I wouldn’t classify my male as defiant, he’s just amped up and wants to go. I can call him back when needed. As far as cross breeds, my first hunting experiences were in Hawaii, every dog I was around was a cross of one kind or another. Each Hunter had their blend of breeds to suit what they were looking for.
When I lived on Oahu, we hunted in steep, triple canopy rain forests, those guys wanted dead silent dogs that will catch. My friends on the big island hunt different country, they like to bay and shoot. I have seen some uniformity with the guys that stick with the breeding program long enough

Re: Let’s talk.
We made a hunt Sunday and used a little different tactic. It’s a high fence place and the hogs know it well and run run. We’ve always caught hogs but wanted more numbers. We decided to hunt it like it was corn and dumped 8 bay dogs. The dogs were bayed and had a sow caught within the first ten minutes. Everything relayed and we had dogs all spread out. In just a few minutes we had two or three bayed one direction and by the time we got over there they had caught it. About the time they relayed another dog got bayed about 3-400 yards over and they all went to him. We caught that one and they relayed again. They relayed and most of the dogs got back together and bayed another and caught it. They all relayed again and we got another split bay. We caught the one and by the time we took care of him the other dogs caught their hog. This all happened within about an hour and a half or two hours. We were content and these ole fat, pudgy dogs were tired so we called it a morning. It was getting pretty warm already too. It was a fun little hunt. No trophies, all the hogs were 100-150 pounds but that’s ok with me. That means nothing got hurt.

Lawdawg,
I think people get the idea high fence ranches are a canned hunt, in my limited experience that simply is not the case. I’ve been on hunts where those runners know where all the holes are, more than once we found ourselves at the fence toning dogs back from the neighboring property.
Usually when I go to Texas that’s what we are hunting on. There are some absolute man sized boars on the main place we go. There’s been some wrecks that thinned the kennel out more than once.

Re: Let’s talk.
Oh would say they are anything but easy. This place maintains the fence very well so there aren’t any holes but the hogs still know every inch of the place. There are briar thickets, what we always call jumping cactus groves, but I think it’s actually some variety of pencil cactus, and even some milk thistle stands that they bed in. When there aren’t many dogs it’s not hard to break bay and run as hard as they can to another spot, but when there are two or three bays going at a time it throws a kink in their plan. That evens the playing field and the hogs lose lol. I think we’ve caught the biggest hogs out. About all that’s left are smaller boars and sows, but if we don’t get them out soon there will be more and these will be bigger.

I’d venture to guess, what you’re left with now are runners. The one ranch we go to doesn’t get dogged unless we go there. The last couple times I went there, the dogs would strike and the boars would not go far at all, just stand their ground and challenge the dogs to bring it on. Get western pretty quick.

Yeah I bet so. I love to watch the dogs bay. They can do some things that amaze me sometimes. Watching them can also tell you a lot about what goes on when you aren’t around to, like if there’s a particular dog that’s busting bays, etc.

Re: Let’s talk.
Well I’ve been doing a little pest control on a small property here. Honestly just feeding and getting trail cam pics of sounders and a couple boars. Last week I went out there to throw some feed and move a camera.
So I leave the dogs at home thinking I’m gonna just be there briefly. I spread some feed, then drive the buggy down to the creek crossing, as I pull up I see movement in the tree line. It’s a spotted sow (about 150 +/-) get up running left to right. She’s got a train of shoats right behind her following her lead, first thought is, well I blew it again. Second thought was, she’s going for that clearing.
So I grab the little 30/30 and hustle to where I can see the hogs in the clearing. I shoot at the sow, it feels right, then I pick out a shoat that’s about to get to the opening and let loose with the second shot. I walk over to the scene of the crime and find lung blood, a short distance later I find the shoat piled up. I keep looking for more sign because I felt confident with the first shot.
With daylight running out and no blood, I head back home. A couple days later I return to spread more feed and see if the dogs can get one. I do a lap around the hay pasture and see a few buzzards get up, I go investigate and they were feeding on that sow, she ran about 200 yards so I assume it was a gut/liver shot. She had a pretty thick curly coat of hair and those 1” sharp teeth. Not the ending I wanted but the landowner was happy.

That’s about right. If you had taken the dogs the first time you wouldn’t have seen anything. On the plus side, at least your gut wasn’t lying to you.

Strong work HP! A dead hog is a good hog.
Just got back from the old lady’s elk hunt. Hiked a few miles, had a bunch of fun and the lady got her first bull, a 5x5! Now it’s time for lions between finishing the kennels, my depredation cow hunt next month and fixing the random stuff that goes wrong for no reason lol.

Congrats to the boss lady, Rowdy.
You took her and got her the bull, now you gotta put her to finishing the kennels and mechanicing so you can hunt.

Re: Let’s talk.
Saturday afternoon took a ride hoping to do some spotting and find an elk or deer and do a little scouting for lion season, get into the high stuff and all hell breaks loose in my front end . Loud clunking and go from no brakes to them completely locked up and sliding off the road. Got turned around and shifted to 4 low and first gear to crawl down without having to use any brakes. Thought of rowdy the whole time against better judgement limped it to the mechanic I use and called them Monday. They called Tuesday and said it was good to go, and only cost 52 dollars which never happens to me. Bolts sheered off the caliper.

I’m glad it worked out for you. I’m sure Rowdy would’ve answered this but I’m betting he’s busy training his wife so he can hunt. I’m sure that’s what it is.

Re: Let’s talk.
Happy turkey day folks!
Joe: glad to hear it was only bolts and it didn’t tear up the rim too!
Law: I was out hunting lol. Took my mule out for her first lion hunt. She did much better than I expected. She’s hard headed and wants to take the route she wants though. But she was very good in the rocks and picked her steps well for the most part.
My females ran the fugg out of a yote until I was able to determine that’s what they were trailing.
took my males to another range and they opened on something but I never was able to find a track. About 2:30 they lost it. It had snowed a tiny bit the night before and it melted off so I think the track just melted off too.
All in all it was a very good day because the girls worked that yote like champs. I just wish it was a lion lol.

Re: Let’s talk.
Found 2 lion tracks and maybe 7 bobcats this morning and was late to eat for the first time in my life cant run them until Sunday here. Sunday is also the last day of rifle season which happens every couple years. Be a tad nervous to turn out some places.
