I know what you mean. I couldn’t afford a shocking collar until I was 22 or 23. I had already been hog hunting since I was 18. Then a year or two later I bought a telemetry rig and that helped tremendously. I bought my first garmin a year and a half ago. They sure are handy!

keep the stories coming.

i got into hounds at 22 years old. bought my first house and the neighbor across the street took me coon hunting. i absolutely loved it but i get up at 4:15 for work so it was tough. when winter came he took me rabbit hunting with beagles. more my speed so i can get to sleep at night. rabbit hunting progressed to fox and coyote hunting then i moved away. i stuck with the rabbit hunting and here i am almost 30 years later still running hounds. now i run snowshoe hare and run bear and bobcat with a friend and his hounds. when i started it was just the beep beep collars. i'm sure glad that technology has progressed solely to be able to find missing hounds.

I totally understand what you guys mean. It sounds like we all started out real similar. I do like my GPS now. It’s not near as good as I hoped, I lose service a lot due to the depth of the canyons, but I usually get it again when I get to the ridge top. I still follow my hounds on foot, a lot of times. I fully believe in being a student of your prey. I’m learning a ton and I’m loving it.

I went out coon hunting for the first time in...well a coons age  . Honestly has to have been at least 3 years. Took 1 dog who i use to take out quite a bit and 3 that have never been. Dogs start a race like 3 different times but just couldn't make it go for some reason. They would trail down river a few hundred yards then get quite, all of a sudden they would be turned and going up river. It was still 75 degrees at 11pm and dry as hell but no idea what was going on. I got back to the truck parked by a bridge so I walked to the other side just hoping they'd get something going. After about 5 minutes my little female June was not around so I checked the gps and she was 500 yards up river, trailing silently. About the same time her brother and sire opened up on her trail and the race was on. They treed right on the edge of the river and as I get close I hear this Strange noise coming from the river and the dogs would stop treeing when I heard it. I get there and a otter was putting the run on them on the coon tree. I was pretty proud of them for not leaving because of the otter.

Ha! That’s crazy, I’ve never heard of an otter being aggressive.

Lol I got a Decent video from across the river u can see the otter swimming towards them. When I would holler to the dogs to get on the tree he would dive and come up 100 yards away but got to the point he wasn't bothered by me.
