Instead of Camp Dry

Postby Mr.pacojack » Sun Dec 13, 2009 3:56 pm

Instead of Camp Dry, I use Thompsons Water Seal. You can buy in Gallon cans and is cheaper than one little can of Camp Dry.Just paint it on, takes less time than a spray can. I use it on Coats, Hats, Gloves, Boots, Gators, Paper maps or maps I have printed of the computer, horse and dog blankets. I have even painted my jeans with it before.

Devin, that's a great tip. I've never tried it, but I got some water proofer for my dog houses last week and i'll give it a shot after the can of aerosol water proofer wears off my boots. How long does the Thompsons last? Thanks.

I wouldn't be running thru a fire with it, but if you read the lable on Camp Dry it will tell you that it is flamable. So I would keep the same precautions.

when i raised chickens in n c me and my mom use to unravel white feed sacks, boil them in water with a couple blocks of pariffin wax, pull them out and put up for window cover, worked like a rain coat.last for couple years, take them down and re do it, never used gas, same way as waxing traps, boiling water and pariffin wax. makes it a little stiff.

I tried the wax and gas trick one time and there were some things I liked about it and some I did not.

I melted the parafin wax in a coffee can (about 3 inches) and filled the rest of the can with gasoline. I used a paint roller and rolled it on a canvas teepee I was staying in. I slept on the ground outside for a couple of weeks until all of the gas smell was gone. The wax was left in the canvas, and I have never seen a more water tight material.

The good: One VERY VERY water proof tent

The bad: Don't try to break camp when its cold! The first time I did, we were moving camp and I took down my tent poles and my teepee just stood there, VERY stiff, like poles were still up. It was hard to roll up, and hard to set up and get it to expand until the sun was out or MR Heater was cranking.

The wax never wore out and the tent was still water tight years later. But with the pre-shrunk Army Duck Marine Canvas on my newer teepee, it has never leaked from day one.

Does the Thompson's last or do you have to re-apply?

We use it on our wall tents. It lasts a couple of years but we use our tents a lot more then the average guy.

I just don't know about soaking a tent with a gas mixture.... just be sure the campfire isn't nearby!
