Welding question

Postby Hunter » Sun Aug 08, 2010 2:22 am

I have a welding question. It's been a WHILE since I welded in school vocational and I know I should know this. If I were to choose between 3/16 and 11 gauge square tubing how much difference are we talking? And would it be worth the additional $1,600 to get the 3/16 square tubing instead of the 11 gauge? It's just panels that will be outside. They will be primered and painted if that matters.

What are you building and what kind of a load are you putting on the steel?? That more than anything should be the determing factor on what thickness of tubing to use.

It will be a welded frame from tubing with wire mesh welded to it. It will be a dog lot. There might be a shade tarp pulled across the top. I planned on using angle iron across the top members and drilling holes in the angle to pull my ropes tight.

the span between the supports and the actual dimension of the tubing would need to be considered too. I would go with the thicker 3/16 material for ease in working with and to help resist rust and urine corrosion.

PegLeg. I actually thought about that very thing today when I watched two of my males walk up and piss on the chain link their in now. I believe I'll just keep saving and get the 3/16 even tho it will cost me an additional $1,600. That's for 10 lots tho.
