I've never tattooed a dog, but have done hundreds of cows. Why wouldn't a cow setup work for a dogs ear? I'm sure you'd want to tape their mouth shut but other than that, it would work....at least in my mind it should.

Heck Thomas, the next time you go to Portland just throw the dogs in the box and take em to a tattoo parlor and get anything you want put on em. And you wont have to worry about getting bit either. You could probably get a anus ring in them too! That way when i come over to hunt with you i will be able to snap a running dog to them and not get throwed out of the race. :D

Tom,I'm not much help but i remember seeing a set advertised in one of the catalogs . Have you thought about freeze branding your dogs? I think that would be the way to go but you don't see it done much anymore .

Never thought much about branding dogs, but, since I have starting posting on the internet & became famous maybe I better brand my dogs, especially since I never lose a bobcat since I got a blue dog. Seriously, Thomas I think freeze branding would be a better way & it does not look bad if done correct & is very noticeable, sure would make a thief think twice, about selling a stolen dog. Al
If I ever hunt with Mark I going to couple my dog to his lead dog and that way M ark won/t get upset when his best don/t show at the tree, he will realize it is hung up, barking at a bush with a prized blue dog. Al
Will also carry a back pack of stakes to driven in ground so we can tell when those running dogs move!

Maybe I will tattoo a running dog treeing mark only way ID ever see one doing it!

Freeze branding wouldn't be a bad idea. I already used a rabbit set of a friends who is now gone. I also micro chip my dogs as well. I not only use my initials but the year and month of the dob when tattooing.

How about I glue some steps on my dogs shoulders so your running dog can stand on them at the tree to see the cat!

Thomas

Fern Ridge Tree hound club will have some field trials coming up soon and will have a set up with A to Z -1 -10 Branding Irons to freeze Brand the ears or the rib cage. Rather than glue some steps? I recommend freezing the ribs to the running dogs, when they hit the tree at the same time is about when they melt apart and problem solved, beside this makes the pack run tighter! Saves a ton of money on glue, stakes and hammers!!!!

The pros of freeze branding? Visual theft deterrent.
Location? Ribs or Ears?

Dogs all look at you in the box or stick there heads out exposing the brand on the ears vs. the hidden rib cage.

A Tattoo in the ears is only visible if looking for the Tattoo..... You have yours micro chipped so why Tattoo?

Mike I doubt I'll make those trials. I'm coming to convention but I am on the fence for prineville or even the cat hunters gathering this year. I'm tattooing for extra insurance and also for dates of birth in case my brain has a fart

I've seen several sets advertised was hoping to hear of a set that is working good for someone else. I'll probably use the valley vet ones.
