Re: 5/18/2014 Getting Warmer
Anything below 29.8 here is about ideal and the more humidity the better. Ran this morning and we did pretty fair off the first jump, hare stretched out about 1100 yards before turning back the way he came....by end of the first hour the humidity started dropping off and it showed. The run slowed ...

Re: off season bunny runnin?
Good deal! Just curious, what kind of numbers did your pack put up on the Garmin? (miles ran, mph, total time on the ground, etc, etc )
No laughing here....sounds like you're gettin your hounds in the woods and havin fun.

Re: off season bunny runnin?
Scott, I think...depending on just how rough your pack will run a hare and of course how the hare itself out that way runs, your e-collar unit is gonna get wore out.
In my experience the way you correct issues like the ones you mentioned is to get dogs that run clean (er). In your case that's ...

Re: off season bunny runnin?
I'm sure this will cause an uproar but the big hounds I tried on snowshoe hare were either too rough or just didn't have enough nose power.
And I tried a few too in an effort to gain the advantage of height in deep powder snow.
Scott, curious how you would manage to work out "track style" losses ...

Re: How About Some Hare
Thanks Bud!!!!! A real blast from the past. It should be a prerequisite for all big game hunters to spend time in front of them little turds. I'm surprised ya haven't swung a few of them over to the short tails. :D :D :D
Take care, Willie

Re: New to Cats in MN
I used to do the terrier thing myself....spent some time barn busting coon with them in MN with a very well known terrierman. We never had that issue or even thought of it. Who would have made you aware of such a thing??
I kept a number of my terriers in the house......to the best of my knowledge ...

Re: New to Cats in MN
I have some advice. When it's very cold, open up your dog box and let the dogs cool down for about 15 minutes before they get out and go to work. Their body will put it in gear for the brutal cold. If you don't they can flash freeze parts.

you know David and he has spoken privately to me about you and his respect for you as a Dog Person.
Oh great    I'm not sure how I should be taking that, ha,ha,ha...

I'll try and respond directly and plainly......so please don't take what I type as antagonistic as it is not meant that way.
You write that Your premise that we are able to do this is because we have raised these Hounds for generations, really holds NO merit from what I/we have seen. ....and yet ...

Re: Correcting Running Hounds
I have several questions and a couple of comments/observations. First off it is quite clear that fellows like Dad's Dogboy and South Texan are intimately familiar with the family of dogs they are using and have been for a long, long time. This has to be a huge, and cannot be understated, advantage ...

Re: Who Pays Attention
I think if a hound fails more often than not they are a lousy hound..period. If you run a pack and breed dogs for running in a pack why in god's name would you wanna "band aid" pressure related problems to running in a pack by soloing a hound? That makes no sense to me.

Re: Who Pays Attention
I'm reading a lot on here about giving corrections and curious about how you guys do it.
Say you have your lead hound, your fastest dog, over running the end calling on the track after the cat has made a turn. How do you go about correcting that? Aside from the obvious loss, how do you guys know it ...

I'm an idiot.....all this time I've been trying to see with my eyes and listen with my ears, not the other way around
The baseball game on the radio analogy is great. Trouble is that sometimes what they're calling isn't the game you think you're listening too

Re: Cutting From The Team
That rare yet near everyone prefers them (brains) so they must all be familiar with dogs like that. Throw in the fact that every tom, dick and harry's brainy dogs have cold noses........it's a wonder the cats ever get away
