Ever wonder why they steal our hounds

Postby nmplott » Fri Jul 04, 2008 2:59 am

you see often enough that a game dog gets stolen. Have you ever thought that someone exploits the qualities that we enhance in our dogs. Our dogs are bred to like people and other dogs. You hardly ever see some one stealing a doberman or pit but it happens enough that you see missing hound posting on numerous sites.

I tell you what this stuff makes me sick,I've had this happen to me twice now,the first time was when I still had a young pack so it hurt but not as bad as this last one a couple of weaks ago, let me tell you the story .I recived a call about a problem bear that needed to be taken ,I ageed to go and see if I could catch this bear and resolve the problem,I've learned not to get to worked up on this stuff , because to many times it turns out to be a dog are a fox something other then a bear.I went out the next morning to the area where the bear was makeing the problems and rigged and started him after fighting him for hours he went up .The same people who called me where watching the whole thing after it was done I wound up missing a damn good dog on the way back to the truck .I broke out my tracker and it showed her to be heading fast to town then the signal went dead and my heart dropped .All that night and a whole tank of gas no signal ,the next day I found my tracking collar unbuckeld in a pond along the side of the main road.

I was at my fathers this weekend. He gave me a livestock brand this weekend, it has been in our family for 112+ years, well anyway as he was showing me the brand in the official livestock brand book.... I got to thinking that this something that could greatly aid in the recovery of "lost" but most likely stolen dogs.
I have had a long discussion with Mike Leonard as to the use and importance of Freeze branding and thought if we could just have a page or someform of database to refrence this is my brand and here is where it goes, it would also be a wise thing to get one from the local livestock board and keep it registered, here in NM they are about 50 bucks a year and it stays in thier data base.

I would have to say besides my wife and kids there is nothing I would rather go to prison for then endding the life of a dog thief. I have never had one stolen but I have had one shot by a deer hunter, and I really think if my 10 year old had not been there I would have shot him on the spot. I sued the guy and lost. the judge said I was taking the risk of getting my dog killed by huntin him, I should have layed him to rest too. I had a buddy that frezze brands his dogs on the ears, dont do that they will cut the ears off of a good dog. Sad but true. But you guys couldn't have said it any better then what you did, and Mike I know how ya feel.
