hey everyone i need some ideas for kennels. i am getting a pup from my buddy at the end of may. and i need to build a kennel for two hounds. that wont cost a lot becauseim only 16 and dont got a lot of money. thanks everyone for the help

If your short on money it would probably be a good idea to just keep em on chains til you can afford a good set up. That way you will be able to avoid the hell of them digging out and getting loose.

new fencing can run between $1.25 and $3.00 per foot it can also be considerably cheaper. i don't know your exact situation but can give some hints. . I hate chains here's why many new guys get a hound and find out it's not their cup of tea and don't take responsibility and let the dog rot on the chain. sometimes literally. and I've seen more problems from chains then from kennels. however chains can be used with a minimum of problems if you stay busy and do all the things you should be doing for and with your hounds anyway. chain link or 2"X4" horse fence six feet high works well.
1. dig a narrow trench where you plan the fence line to be. 2. dig the post holes 3. dig post holes and cement post. 4 stretch fence 5. cement bottom of fence in trench adding large rock or other fillers helps cut cost. 6. cover kennel floor with 3"-5" of small gravel 7. install gate and dog house 8. put electric fence insulators on the post and put up electric fence 4" from ground and one at the very top of fence. a continuous circle with one up and down wire conecting them. build a water resistant box large enough to house a fence charger and hang the charger near the gate in the cover. this works real well and ishard to beat for safety or security . a automatic waterer is nice also this helps the dogs get as much as they need here in az it is a real life saver. a peaked roof built a couple feet off the ground in the center of the pen helps provide extra shade/rain protection. A good kennel is pretty much worry free and well worth the work and expense. unless you have more time then most people those hounds will spend alot of time in the kennel or on a chain. the kennel vrs chain arguement has been hashed out many times before on here so I won't get in it any farther. with liberal prices you should be able to build a 8'X16' kennel for $200 that will last a life time and keep your hounds safe and in place.

If you can also find a fencing company in your area who installs fence, you can sometimes get good deals on used chain link fence

Totally agree with pegleg, I don't believe is chains either but I believe a little while on a chain is better than a poorly made kennel. Firm believer in, if your going to do it, do it right and do it right the first time. From the sounds of it pegleg has it figured out. If all that only costs 200 bucks, than thats a gold mine for sure.

i just plugged the cost in from my area and came up with that. you could probably go for less if you where selective in your materials and used chain link would sure help. in oregon i would guess a slope and gravel and pipe drain under the fevce going out would help feep the mud down deep gravel is the best next to raised floors or concrete.

Look on Craig's List for used cyclone fencing. It's usually pretty cheap.

Cattle panels are less than $20 a piece, they're 16 foot long, and self supporting, you can do a lot with them. Here's a picture of the two dog kennel I'm building, mostly out of free scrounged material, the plastic barrels are tunnels that lead to the boxes inside the shed.
