California Coonhuntin' Pics

Post by Redwood Coonhounds »

Season opened a while back, but we were still busy bear hunting.

We lost both of our main dogs to bears this year, and added a few new dogs to the pack. So things have been sorta rocky.

But anyway, here's the results of our first two trips of the season.

Friday 12/14.
Two coons, two trees. Shot one out, 22lb sow. Took a little while to get into a groove and get everyone settled down, but not a real bad night. Here's pics.

Screech (3 years old, her very first time cooning)

Tonight 12/16
Everyone was all buisness tonight, and hunted hard. Got two put up. Dutchess started the track, split trees, Aspen treed one, and Buster treed the other. Aspen's coon was making all kinds of noise and was very nervous. He was in a small tree and climbed it to another and then jumped down in the river. So we took 'em over to Buster's tree and got that one down for em. 15lb boar.

Might as well add some pictures of our little coondog in the making. (Hopefully a beardog too!)

Drifter, 7 weeks old.

Down by Sacramento more. That's the thinnest parts. There are some massive briar thickets down here as far as the eye can see. These young dogs are getting used to getting in there, with out my little head first briar bustin' dog Crash, they all kinda take some time to warm up the them. They'd rather hunt by the water. LOL.

Okay, to me it just looked liked the hardwoods you'd see back east. Is that spot a private spot or public?

Not sure wheere you go Alex, but it's public. Just over by the river. Only problem is we drive the main blacktop and they hunt about 200 yards below us. So ya gotta be careful. But we got a pretty decent handle on 'em. And the only car we've seen was a Cop, he slowed down, listened to 'em tree a minute, waved and went on, LOL.

No, it's way north of that. It's north of Sac and south of the bypass, Sac river.

Here's a couple more from Saturday night. Got this one up right off the bat.

Aspen climbed up there a ways tryin to get him, and ended up falling out. Crazy mother to be! She seems fine, but I might have to lay her up! We left him be after we got everyone out of the tree. No since shooting it out over the water.

We got another in a big hollow oak tree. Took them a while to figure it out. Not sure if they cold trailed or if the coon had been out and about and then ran back to his den. But he was up in there. He won. :P

If ya look close you can see the coon's butt sitting on the limb at the top of the pic. I tried getting it all in one shot, but didn't work so well.
