Re: How accurate is your cat or varmit rifle
Hey know Richard i resent that remark? You know us fat guys like to eat.Hell i'll bring my own ammo.
Roy i agree with your last line keep your head down and follow through.Just like when i help people in archery i tell them the worst thing they good do is take there eye off the target.Pull back relax, take aim(keep pulling back) then shoot dont try to grab your bow after the shot just keep your eyes fixed on your target.Maybe i am not exsplaining myself good enough. I know how to shot This is more of reloading related. I am new to reloading.Well i can grab any rifle/bow or shotgun in my gun cabinet and stack up to the best of the meat hunters. i am jusy tring to reload my for my gun so i can hit a plate at 1000 yds. And i will get it done if i have to go thru the trial and error route so be it.I have just found out it is easier to ask the somebody more knowledgeable about the subject. If it was archery, i have already been thru this crap.If people want i will post video of a 6 shot group at a hundred yard with my hoyt ultra elite to prove my shooting abilty. Shooting is not the issue i just dont understand the bullet and lances deal.People have told me by sticking a bullet in an empty case, and gentle inserting the shell into the gun the bullet will slide into the case and give you depth of your lances the back it off .001" and start there but i can't seem to agree with this because when i do so the bullet sticks way out of the case.

Re: How accurate is your cat or varmit rifle
That is how you find the depth of the chamber(it is called jam length) and is a good starting point if your oal is to long then you need to go and have the barrel set back. It sounds like you have to much freebore. If you want to shoot 1000 yards with a 22 caliber rifle then you need to have at least a 1 in 8 twist barrel. Send your rifle to a good long range guy and get it set back or possibly a new barrel. Also I can't say enough about having your action bushed by GreTan to make it flat shoot. There are so many variables when you start shooting long range with any rifle. Are you inside and outside neck remeaning? out you checking each shell for in line trueness, bullet to case. Are you using a casemaster to inside consistentcies of shells. Weighing empty shells and then measuring water weight. If you are going to not only shoot a 1 inch group at 500 yards but shoot moa at 100 you definitely need a ouhler 43 and several sets of wind meters probably able to send info via radio or maybe wifi. You will need to shoot an 80 gr bullet with the highest bc you can find. Good luck I have been shooting long range for years And handloading for as long and if I can shoot moa out past 400 yards I fell I am shooting on the mark.

Hey Mr. Clamathcathunter , who's the buddy here that needs grub. We got plenty food here and accomodations dont pass on excuses get your butt's over this side, even as a group of buddies you'll have good fun.
I have worn out a few barrels in my time shooting.Took quite a bit for granted though, having a dad that supported my two brothers and I and himself being an avid trophy hunter. There was always ammo aplenty methodically reloaded by dad or factory stuff to run through the barrell's. He collected pre '64 Winchesters so we had pretty fine rifle's as kids.We have from .22 Hornet up to .375 H&H in pre '64 Win . That .22 Hornet will be transferred into my name soon and I believe it's going to be fun using within it's limitations.
I have a .220 Swift customised with a Shillen bull barrell on a pre '64 action and bedded in a varmint stock without thumbhole. I am currently waiting for a Leupold 4.5 - 14x40 for it.This will be used for culling and jackal shooting in the homelands.Took 21 adults within 5000 hectares in 7 nights there with my .243 Win. There are still many ,many 100 000 hectares where no one shoots jackals at all. I'm awaiting a govt. contract for the entire old Ciskei and Transkei republic's to do their PAC work for communal farmers.
Since I now want to take my reloading to a new level I dug out a book from dads library called " The Accurate Rifle " by Warren Page. Well to say the least I learn't a lot and it made my head buzz. Try get hold of this book or a similar book I learn't a lot, even that there's a difference between re-loading and handloading and a difference between those and precision hand loading !!
I shot for our Provincial Bisley team and got my gold riflemans medal in the military and thought I knew it all till I read this book. It's been a great help.
I would not fool with a .22 calibre for 1000 yard shots - go .30 cal , you'll have better results and less frustration.
Waiting for you guys to take the plunge.
Roy.

Re: How accurate is your cat or varmit rifle
Absolute best months to enjoy the hounds is Feb thru May , though we hunt year round.
If you want to watch hounds ability to work a difficult track that will be from June thru to October. We have lots of excitement from about November thru to April as the Jackal pups start leaving the den sites and theres plenty of high speed action.
If you want to shoot some game as well from March thru to Sep is a good time. But strictly speaking we can hunt year round.
Let me know when you got a bunch of guys and want to come over.
Take care - Roy.
