Houndcrazy93,
I think you answered your own question. There are good dogs in all colors, the important thing is to find out which one works the best for you and go with it.

Get yourself 3-4 Kemmer stock mountain curs. Mostly gold nugget blood with a little bit of yellow jack. You might as well start out with the best. You will tree more bear faster with these dogs than with hounds. Races will be shorter and when the bear trees his neck and backend will be wet with dog slobbers. These dogs make those walking, fighting bear climb. They are some fast, hair pulling rascals. And at the same time they keep from getting hurt all the time.

Re: What hound???
you show me a dog that is biteing bears on the neck and i will show you a dead dog .
havent see but one kemmer so i dont know much about them.the one i have seen is more of a house dog that might go with the hounds .and when it does its in last place. but i cant judge the breed off that one dog. i have heard some good about them just never seen it.
if you want a good allaround dog stick with the treeing walker.

From first hand experience I agree with coast...... If you catch very many bear, and lion for that matter, on bayups with your Kemmers you better have some replacements ready.

Re: What hound???
get dogs from somebody in your area that is catching bears JMO i like them gritty enough to catch bears and stick with them, but theres a fine line between gritty and suicidal, not sure about you boys but i dont like going to the vets after every bear my dogs catch, id rather kill a bear on the ground, then have a treed bear and be searching for a dead dog so i can get my collars back, and i have had to do that before and its not fun...

While I have seen a few top Kemmers for bear... If you plan to get an all Kemmer bear pack, you better have a fat wallet and some time because you'll go through a pile that won't be worth a shit on bear.
In all honesty, most guys will say Plotts for bear and while a great Plott is hard to beat on bear, the 5 best bear dogs I have EVER seen, were not Plotts. The best bear dogs I have ever seen were grade dogs bred with bear in mind.
Get your dogs from the best bear hunters. Believe it or not, they usually have the best bear dogs.
Take care.

Re: What hound???
RockCreek, i hear what your sayin, i only have one paperd dog, and probably the best all around bear dog i have ever seen, was a bluetick lookin thing from North Carolina, a guy who hunts with one of my huntin buddies give him the pup, AMAZING dog, trail, tree, gritty as hell and fast. He has a shot of everything in him i think, but he has been line bred and its kinda like the guys own strain? they are bear catchin machines, but good luck getting a pup from him lol anyways ol witty is 10 years old and still going strong, a guy from michigan bought him off my buddy and i get the chance to hunt with that dog every year when they come up to kill a few bears...

Hunting with hounds is not a hobby its a disease!
