Braiders and braided gear-

Postby Brady Davis » Sun Apr 25, 2010 4:44 pm

Any guys on here braid rawhide or leather? I used to make a bunch of gear and have since started to get back into braiding a bit. I'd be curious to chat with guys about what they're making and discuss ideas and see some pics....

Anyone?

Glad to see you doing it, that is a lost art. My buddy Roger Rees still does a little and is very good at it. Hope to see some pictures.

I don't but I have a room full of it. I have a good friend here that is realy good on the rawhide, and has built me many bosals and reins for my string. Hair men are hard to find but occasioanly one will get parolled or break out. LOL! Hard to beat it. I have a lot of nice McCarty's from real skinny for my bosalitas all the way up to some rougher than a wood hauler's ass for colts. LOL!

Fellow asked me today why I was riding plain reins and just a plain old Greg Darnell bit. I said you will know in about five minutes so pull your hat down and get ready to dive into some thick crap after them mutts. Lord that super thick oak and mansinita can be tough on braided reins with chains but not as bad as some guys claim.

Just point to for the frackus and give em some steel! Kiii Yaaw!

Here's a picture I found of a hatband I did a few years back. A buddy in Montana built two of the little damascas blades with lion claws on them. I tied a button on the claws and then sent his back with his blade as the feather in this band. Some of the rawhide is dyed and I think the leather knots were kangaroo.
I never got around to building mine, still have my little blade for the feather in mine when I find the time. The blade is pretty secure due to a rare earth magnet sewn in the sheath.
I have a 12 strand bosal started of horse rawhide, I wanted some contrasting hide for the noseband and heel knot but havn't lost a dark colored horse yet :)
