Dog quit barking?

I have a Walker dog that has almost quit barking, he just barely gets a sound out and it sounds like he is really horse.
Has anyone had this happen before or know and remedies?
It started after I hunted him in the rain 1 night.

I gave him penicillin and have been putting honey in his food but it's not better yet.

Saw a dog go completley hoarse one time, vet told my buddy to pour a couple table spoons on salt down the dogs throat, couple days later to repeat, didnt take but 3-4 days dog was back to normal. its worth a shot.

I finally broke down and took him to the Vet, $140.00 later - everything dealing w/his throat looked ok, he has a fever and his ears are very red. Vet figures he has a common cold and a slight infection. 2 different types of antibiotics and drops for his ears.
hopefully this clears it up.
