Hound wheezing

Post by vthunter »

I'm looking to buy a coon hound from a buddy of mine and the hound wheezes a lot it's almost like a smokers cough. He does it tied to a chain, rig even hunting a little bit but it doesn't seem to bother his performance at all. The guy doesn't have the money to bring him to the vet and that's the reason he is up for sale. Just wondering if anybody has run into this problem and can give me a little insight on it before i buy the dog and take him to the vets and spend a fortune. He also said he's been like that for a couple of years but it hasn't seemed to bother him.

Sounds like some antibiodics for 10 days couldnt hurt him. Fluid in the lungs maybe.

That wheezing is something that scares the HELL out of me!!!! Only because it is a symptom of anaplasmosis. Yet, since it has been there a long time. Most likely is not the cause. As left untreated the dog would have died already I'm pretty sure.

May be worth a vet check anyhow before buying. Heck, if the guy cannot afford to care for the dog. May be best to just get it off his hands, and deal with it.

I've got a Walker like that.
We got him checked out at the vet a few years ago and couldn't find anything.
It kept getting worse and worse but we could find no apparent cause.
One day we decided to start giving him Prednazone which is a steroid of sorts.
cleared him up in a few weeks so we stopped giving ut and the cough came back.
Started the Pred and it went away again.
We played with it a bit and now give a small dose to him daily.
The cough is under control as long as we medicate and he shows no sign of being harmed by it,still hunts like a trooper.

Does he cough at all with the wheeze?

I would not buy the dog without a vet check.. I had something wrong with a dog, that just seemed like a case fluid in the lungs... It wasn't.. and it has seriously effected him nd will shorten his life drastically...

Vet check...
