Helping a pup tree

Post by Tree_m »

I have been hunting a young dog of mine. She will tree sometime an others she won't. Most of the time her tree switch will be going off and you can hear her treeing but when you get there she die's off. I can get her to bark but won't hanner at it. Was looking for any advice to see if i could get her to tree better.

some dogs are stronger tree dogs young and some are better trail dogs young. eventually if you show them enough game in a tree, they will locate and tree like a champ! I had the same problem when I started out with just my pups. the best thing I found was huntin coons. we could tree 4 or 5 coons a night so it is repetative. If they would not look up the tree and bark I would climb up and start doing whatever it took to get their attencion. eventually I knock the coon out of the tree and they get to stretch it. it don't take too many times of that before they start treein their a$$ off.

Praise her up good when she trees, especially if she gets a visual on the bear, and completely ignore her when she doesn't. Sounds like she's a little nervous when your there at the tree.

cobalt might have a point about nervousness but with out a more detailed background its hard to be sure of the cause. how old is the pup do you make a big deal about praising her and let her tree for awhile after you get there let her know just because you showed up doesn't mean to stop treeing till your ready for her to stop. if you need to pat the tree and make a ass outa yourself to fire her up.

Or they start leaving the tree looking for something to run again, further increasing your problems.

IMO dont shake anything out of the tree, show her an elevated cage or better yet put a coon on a catch pole and put it on a branch just out of reach where she can see it. You can poke the coon to get the dog fired up.
You can leave the catch pole on the coon and tie the pole to the tree.
Also, this way your coon is reusable

Another option is rease a trainer where you know your dog will catch it in a patch of small trees where it will tree and the dog can easily see it (like a bunch of short alders)

I would try the most natural route first before messing around with the goofy stuff.

I have the same problem with a 10 month old walker pup. As you walk into the tree she is hammering away. Soon she is bored and looks for things to do. What I try to do is tie her back wher she can see the bear or cat, a little bit behind the big dogs. This seems to keep her attention better and makes her want back to the tree.

all good advise here. i also see this with some young dogs and I feel leashing them up where they can see it helps.Another thing to think about is at my house I always get after those damn barking pups so when you get out in the hills the arent sure if its ok to bark around me or not. They will eventually figure out the difference between home and hunting but you have to praise the good behavior when you can.

never had something knocked out of a tree get away from me. don't know what that's all about? the thing it has done for me is show a pup that something was in that tree for them. I like the advise on tying them back too. this has worked for me more than once.

Thanks for the advice. If i keep taking her to the woods and putting her under the tree it should come to her. I have been getting the dogs out a couple times a week. This dog seem to be doing everything right so i hope the treeing part will come.
