baiting bears
I have a bunch of pups. i need to start training them, and the best way to do this is with a bait i was wondering if yall had any idea to make one and what to put in it and how to bring bears in to it?

Re: baiting bears
start out with fryolater oil from restaurants they give it away after its used. slosh it up a tree as high as you can get it for wind carrying purpose . dont get it on ya its a mess.dump some on the ground any bear walking through it will leave a trail that other bears will follow in . then any sweet food to keep them coming back . there will be other critters there too for pups to run, so unless your starting with a bearhound then feeding pups in , or know the bear has just been there.well lets just say it can be frustrating. good luck !

Re: baiting bears
Need to check the local and state laws on baiting or feeding. Some states don't allow it but certain times of the year, some don't allow it on public land, and some don't allow it at all.

We've gone away from using meat, we seem to less coyote problems!
Re: baiting bears
Can't go wrong using a little Anise oil at your bait site!

Re: baiting bears
Rolled oats and promolas. Hog fat . Big bears like giant chunks of fresh meat scraps witn the bone. I don't know if you have beavers down there but beaver carcasses are hands down the best bait you can use. I've used almost everything and I would stay away from sweets. Any deepfryer grease works good to . Pour big puddles around the barrel so that it gets drug off into the bush other bears intersect that trail and follow it back to the bait. If you want to get the bears in your schedule don't over bait. Take in one gallon pail of popcorn and then you will create competition at the bait. Big bears at the top of the hierarchy will know when the bait is coming and this usually hang up within a few hundred yards of the bait. They know if they don't show up quick that one gallon of popcorn is gone. There's all kinds of good bait it just depends on your area and the type of bears your dealing with..
Good luck
