Well all breed are different, depends on when they can start hanging with the big dogs. Thats when i start them which is at 6 months, and by 8 months they keep up no prob and learn too take lead and start to use their nose more.
Hunting with hounds is not a hobby its a disease!

Our walkers started early on bear at 5 months and my bluetick/walker cross is taking a little longer at 5 months he is not very interested in bear yet. Almost took off with the bigger dogs the other day though.

Re: when to start a pup
i strongly disagree with that statement, its not the breed of dog, its the dog it self, sure some breeds on average are stonger in some parts than others, but i've seen walkers that wouldn't start going till they where over a year old, so it depends on how you think your pup can handle it, cause you start them to early and they get hurt and they won't want to chase bears. every dog is different, and should be started at different times. the breed means nothing, its all the dog, and the training, what they just said is prejuidece, all the way. no breed is better than others in anyway.

If that was aimed at my comment i wasnt trying to be prejudice i was just showing what my dogs did and how they could be different. Those are the two different breeds i have and just my experience with them. All dogs are different and are going to mature differently.

No i think that was at me, and i didnt mean the breed like walkers, blueticks, redticks, plotts, black and tans. I should have said it better, When i ment different breeds are different, It depends on the cross, I have seen early starters and later starters in every breed of dog dont get me wrong. Sorry if i sounded prejudice but i will hunt anything that wants to hunt.

I gotta agree, as soon as they will run with the big dogs weither it be 3 months or three years. every dog young and old that I have ever seen get mucked out just makes them hate bears more. and want to fight them more.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

Please keep in mind that I'm no pro when it comes to training pups......
I would recommend letting the pup tell you when he's ready.
