I run garmin collars and I always find it interesting to see how many miles my dogs run.
My dogs are still not in top shape but this last weekend I got lucky enough to see a 150lb. bear on the road, I dumped the box which consisted of 9 dogs. I repacked several of the them but I had only one that made it all the way through to the tree and he had 16.5 miles on his collar. I was out of garmin signal from him for about 45 min. so he could have easily clocked 2 to 3 more miles.
I was wondering how many miles you others clock on long raises.

15 miles was common last year but I picked up a good bay dog and the races have shortened drastically

Along race for me is about 10 miles. I find if the race goes much more then 5 miles the chances of seeing it in the tree start to drop every mile.

dhostetler, if you want more accurate information from the Garmin download the collars. They keep a track log even when not communicating with the Astro.

How do you do that?
My longest was just over 19km and a loss at a ravine where the bear ran across a fallen tree to the other side 60' above the bottom (couldnt cross the river either, raging)

BlacktailStalker,
Open the Garmin map program that you are using. Turn your Astro on and plug it into your computer. Then turn on the collar you want to download. Once the Astro is tracking the collar go to the Dog information page and press enter. you will see a list of options select download collar. Once it says download complete don't press anything on the Astro until you download it onto the computer. Once loaded on the computer press okay on the Astro. Now you can view all the tracks that were saved onto the collar. You will find that they are much more detailed then the ones that are transmitted to the Astro, also they will hold 3000 track points each.
The only other thing I do is to delete the tracks from the collar when I am done. Sometimes something happens and there will be a bad track that prevents you from downloading it but not very often.
Hope that helps.

Re: How miles do hounds run a bear
Thanks, tman308 I'll try that.
I know I am lacking in aggression. The dogs I have that are half decent bay dogs are slow while my fast ones aren't hair pulling bay dogs. So the fast dogs usually leave the bay dogs in the dust. However as far as I could tell this bear never stopped until he treed.

Re: How miles do hounds run a bear
How close can the garmin be with a 30 sec update a dog can make alot of tracks every update and the way I understand the garmin only plots piont to point. I think that this also applys to really steep country If your dog climbs a mile up the mountain but only travels 400 yards from an ariel veiw does it record a mile or 400 yards on the dog track?
