When I started my first pack of dogs from pups I had this problem. they would trail them and once they were in the tree the dog had no Idea what happend. I started climbing the tree with the coon and getting the dogs attention eggin them on and such. then I would throw the coon out on top of them. it didn't take many times of doing that until they located and treed like crazy!
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

My $.02

What I would do,

catch a coon put it in a roll cage or small cage, get the pup excited, show him how much you like this.

Put the caged coon in a tree up there a ways, use a rope and pulley so you can raise and lower it, when he tree's on it tell him how great he is. I also like to use the fraise "talk to him" over and over while doing both of these exercises.

Do this a couple of times, then when out hunting with him and the older dogs trees get in there with the pup and be a cheerleader and talk him up tell him to" talk to him" spend your time with the pup and let the other guys look for the coon

Good luck
