Lol, my mom has a saying about these dogs:

They'll either be a good dog or a dead dog!

Cull a dog for barking in the kennel.......amazing!!!! I hope that this is one of those dumb questions and your not serious.
I'm thankful for being dumb and slow, then i don't have to over think this stuff.

the trainer has to be smarter than the dog and dont take offense to what im saying i said trainer ,there is alot of smart people who dont know how to train a dog . bark collar . red rider bb to the butt. i live in town with 8 hounds i dont listen to it and neither do my neighbors. ive pulled into some guys yards where you had to yell just to talk to them .i just shake my head . same when i went hunting with them .every dog barked from before we loaded them until they were fed at the end of the day.never will i hunt that way again . it was his fault not the dogs.

kordog is correct. It's not the dogs fault, its the owner. Hounds are no different then any other dog. They can be trained from an early age not to bark in the yard or in the truck.
Instead of trying to fix the barking, why not look at the REASON the dog is barking and fix that. Your dog is barking at everything because it is bored sitting in a kennel day after day after day. I had all the same problems everyone else had when I kept my dogs in kennels for years, barking, sore feet, bordom and always out of shape. I changed 12 years ago and now keep all my dogs in a half acre run. All of these problems went away.

the dog gets exercise. she is the only dog in the kennel that does this. like A.D.D. or something. i noticed she is getting ill toward other dogs also. tried bark collars, shock collars , bb gun, water hose, dog whistle, just out of ideas and frustrated.

with the dog being ill too that adds a whole new can of worms how is the dog in the woods with other dogs ? if ill then cull and dont think twice about it cause she is no good at home or in the woods. your just not gonna be happy with the dog at this point so you have to make the decision.try pepper spray as a next to last resort .

all of these guys have the right idea. I live in a subdevision in the middle of the city. my house has 8 feet on both sides and 15 feet in the back. neighbors in all directions don't even know that I keep 10-12 hounds in my yard at all times. I have a kennel that they all just roam around in. I laid the kennel out of cindar blocks and they don't see what is going on outside so they usually don't bark. unless the neigbors house cat jumps the wall in to their kennel, but that only happens once per cat. the key is consistancy. Whatever you do to punish the dog for barking always do the same. I have a rolled up blue print that I go out and whack em with. I don't even think it hurts them, but the noise it makes when I hit the wall and when it cracks em on the snout, something about it that they are petrified of. Whenever I get a new dog that is not used to the drill, it takes about a week of three or four times a night going out and playing baseball with it's head and they figure it out. I also let them out for twenty minutes every night and hunt them two or three times a week. tired dogs don't bark as much as bored ones. I also had a buddy that had the same problem. he would go out and duct tape it's mouth shut for the rest of the night if it barked. sounds crazy, but it worked for him. you've just got to find something that works for you. as far as the dog gettin growly with other dogs, If it's a male you can cut him if not there is no real cure for it and it will be a major pain in your a$$ forever.

I think it depends on your circumstances and what you are willing to put up with. Do you have a lot of ground around you or are your neighbors close? Does the dogs abilitys outweigh its bad habits?
Bark and shock collars are nice but you can't leave them on 24 7. Dogs will become collar smart. You need to be willing to correct the dog yourself no matter if its 3 P.M. or 3 A.M.
Dogs bark for many reasons as stated in these posts, however some dogs are just flat bad to bark. And thats where you have to make your own decisions about what to do. I will say this, I can't stand a dog that constantly barks and if I had to cut back on the # of dogs I have, how easily they are kept would definetly factor in to my decisions.

Good Luck.

every time i hear this statement it upsets me. no dog desrves their mouth taped shut. my dogs bark in the yard but there is usually a deer the pups are barking at and they get shocked or there is a bear in the bait buckets in my truck. if they are barking at squirrels or the house cat out milling around it don't bother me. last time i checked i have never had a squirrel ruin a hunt. Dean mentioned the ideal situation and that is my plans in the near future.

Like I said, a freind of mine did the duct tape deal. I have never had it go long enough to get to that point. this dog though I think the duct tape was a better alternative than the beatings, pepper spray, and eventual lead bullet in the head. dog learned quick and has never had to get taped since.

I agree - the duct tape deal is a little out of line. I used black electrical tape on another guy's dog once and we all got to sleep the rest of the night! When I told him about it, he got mad, took his dog, and the rest of us never lost another bit of rest. End of problem.

when she hunts she claims the tree as her own. which is not good for my young dogs.
it is amazing how they become collar smart. I disipline her every time she does it. one day the neighbors will call the cops. either for the dog or me going out there 2 in the morning in my underwear yelling at dogs. lol
