Hounding Alaska

Post by tomtom »

Pretty dead set on moving to the big frontier. Have had hounds most of my 28 years. I made a post on an Alaska outdoors forum asking about using hounds. Got a few good helpful responses that all point to the same scenario; No roads and too many wolves. Not a place for running the dogs.... Anybody feel different or is this just the way it is?

I spend about 2 1/2 months up there each year. And all the time its in the back of my mind about running dogs up there. Personally, I wouldn't do it. I talked to one guy up there that had dogs. They all got killed by bears. And as you said, there are NO roads anywhere and the brush is so thick and the hills so steep, you'd never get to your dogs. I hunt one valley that is so full of black bears that it would be a joke running dogs in there but if they ever made it over the hill, you'd never see them again. However, don't let just the dogs keep you back, there is so many other things to hunt and fish for up there it's almost endless. There is one thing you MUST have up there if you want to get around. An airplane and/or a boat. Otherwise, you'll never get to experience everything Alaska has to offer.

It is possible. So far I've gotten all the required paperwork however time has been my number one hinderance. roads are definately a problem but to hunt anything around here you have to get back in the woods. A boat is a definate plus. What area are you moving to?

Don't really know where I'm moving to yet. Like everyone else, I need a job. I have some step family in Wasilla that has been there over 20 years, and more family that hates to leave when they go and even like the winters. Down here in La Grange, Texas, I think I have seen snow twice. I'm a construction coordinator and there seems to be a lot more going on up there than here, even in the current economy. I have applied for 6 jobs so far but no responses yet. I have a great job here but lay awake at night thinking about life up there. I really don't know where the greatest place would be, but I don't want to go north of Fairbanks... I think.

a few areas in alaska you could, i know prince of whales in southeast alaska has great bear hunting, quite a few roads and not a ton of wolves, you could do it there! You just have to remember alaska is so big that if you cut it in half Texas would become the third largest state in the union! And a few areas you could do it and most no way in hell!

Just be ready for a little higher cost of living up here. Comming from the south myself it was a hard pill to swallow at first.
