ATV, Horses/Mules, Hiking in

Post by southwestwalkers »

What to see what everyone is using out in the field. I take my rig as far as I can then it's all about foot power!

Ialways ride a horse or mule. If the dogs are stopped in bluffs, I go afoot. If they are just traveling through, I ride around.

I wish I had or had space for mules. My method of transportation is boots! Most places I hunt, a truck is useless and wouldn't make much of a difference as I don't rig and you can't see most tracks. I just park at the bottom of a canyon and hike up, walk around the ledges, and back down again. Repeat. One of these days I gotta get a mule!

I got a Caddilac side by side four wheeler and a guy by the name of Bennie G who drives for me.We are never late, and always fashionable when we arrive at the tree. He wears one of them little captain type lids, and wears a tie. Looks sort of funny with them high heeled cowboy boots and spurs, but what they heck!

What's up with all this live stock? Man he can burn out, spin do some donuts and we are back at camp sipping Champagne in no time.

Just kidding: In the mood I guess.

I like horses but mules will do
I like pretty girls but regular will do

Benny in a capitan style hat and tall tops? He has the personallity for it, but I still would like to have a picture of it. I never would let him live it down. As for me, I would have to check all three. When we get after hogs on the river it's an atv and boot leather. When I'm still looking for that first cat it's horseshoes and vibram.

95% of the time I ride the 4 legged mules. 5% I hunt out of the truck when I dont feeling like freezing on the mules in fresh snow.

I can probably hike with most anyone, but I would rather my horse take me there. Enjoy a good ride and maybe get lucky and have a run. On the horses at least if you don't have a race the dogs get out and don't have to be crammed in the box all day, and besides it makes the dogs happier, handle better, and better hunters as well IMO. But on the other hand when there's too much snow you gotta go with the sled and wheeler as well.

I had a very sincere young hunter talk to me about this thread. She has little outside exposure but said her questions to hunter she knew ran nearly along the lines of this poll.

She then said however she found it hard to get any of them on a horse or mule on bare ground and those that walked only walked after they had put their dogs on a track that crossed the road either spotted or rigged.

I said what is your point?

Sort of a second look and then , she said well what the deal?

I said no shitter Tex Ritter most are paw and beller and no real gravel on the road when you get down to it, so call them an say let's go.

How about you she says? I am busy I said, I have bridge club this afternoon and croquet this evening at the country club. Hope I spelled that right. LOL!

It's boot leather around here. Might rig if your one of the first 500 to pass by. It's illegal to ride horses, mules or ATVs on the public land around here although the wardens can ride them in to check you out.

Good grief Hunter,
I thought the idiots out here in the west were earth worshiping fools. Do the "powers" in your parts believe that all of the great outdoors could possibly be Holy ground, like maybe all of that dirt blew in from the Temple since the walls have been destroyed for hundreds of years? I do understand that my mule is prone to poop just anytime she takes the notion, but for the most part, at least to my knowlege, she's never been able to land it all on a little fuzzy (at least not all at once) and do the stupid, slow moving varmint in completely with only one application. In all seriousness though, outside of total dictatorship control by a bunch of self righteous people forcing thier elitist agendas down the throats of the SILENT majority, what is the reasoning behind those rules imposed by a bunch of JACKASSES?
Perhaps you can forgive my attitude this morning. It's Sunday and I get all riled up about these things. ALL of the bibles that I have ever read to any extent tell us to worship The Creator, NOT the creation.

Well Benny.... LOL!!!!! I have never been given a direct answer to that question when I have asked. Apparently when a horse or mule shits it carries seeds like Fescue, Timothy, Alfafa or what ever it's been eating. The just can't have that. Their are trails that wash into the creeks and the silt chokes out the spawning area of small little minnows and crawdads. They also kill the eggs of those same small minnows, crawdads, and lizards when they cross the creeks. In all my time in the mountains I have NEVER not ONCE seen ANYONE down in the creeks looking at or for these critters. Now I have seen "study" groups along the road (where it's easy access) doing "damn age control" studies. They base all their finding off the easiest places to get to. Don't bother the fact that the oils and tar and who knows what else are draining straight into the places they are checking. Now they will however feed us enough scrapes to shut us up. They will open SELECT trails (that they deem suitable) for horse back. These trails are pretty much useless to hunt from thou. Here's another one that will get up. I rode my bike once to my tree stand and got a warning ticket because I was riding down a trail and came up on some wardens. It's even illegal to do that.
