I think I am on to many forums for a old man, I am on Big game houndawg,plott.com, and read off Waycools forum smithdealsocietyand Texas Boars out of Texas.

Now Spanky you run Walkers,Ike red bones and so on and on but really which is the fastest dog on track, I have hunted enough in Calif that it take a fast dog to put a bear up a tree, but reading all these forums is it just the hunters preference, I would think a blut tick cold nosed would be a little slower. but a cur [kemmer] would be faster.
Jeff Allen I think now runs all curs. you guys give me some answers and don't tell me to get off the forums because now in Arkansas it is cold and a old man 74 don't have much to do. and I have Spankys,Ike's and Hounddawg vidios

I know the answer is probably not the one you want to hear but I have to say its all personal preference. There are fast and slow in every breed. there are cold nosed and hot nosed in every breed.

I have several walkers at this time, some I can run on both lion and bear, some just on lion and bobcat. I will not own a hound that runs just bear, no purpose for one here in montana and not worth feeding for the few weeks I run in idaho.

Bears without a doubt in the mountainous country here in the west are marathon runners and you need hounds that will be quick enough that can put the pressure on them. I know guys that have all plott packs and no others that have all walker packs. Do not know anyone in this country that have an all bluetick, black and tan or redbone bear packs but that does not mean they are not out there just that I do not know them.

I have friends that have mixed packs because they are not breed loyal and just want the best of the best and build their packs from whatever works......those are the fellas that tree bears consistantly

Let me first say this I am no expert at all in this hound game. As I am learning something more every time i follow the dogs. In my pack of hounds and houndXcurs. On a hot track the curs will flat smoke the hounds seems like they can wind it better. The full hounds are still trying to run the track and not the channel. On the older tracks it definatly is the full hounds that carry it.

thats my .02

Spanky that was the answer I wanted to hear because Houndawg, and Cal have mix breeds and preference was the only way i could figure it out.
In Calif it was against the law to bother mtn lions but we never told our dogs that but they were easy compare to a 200 # bear he is like a race horse. thank you.

To set the record straight Jeff Allen runs NO curs.
Jeff's dogs are either his registered stock of Nance bred treeing walkers or his old strain hounds that are a combination of old line treeing walker and some of the english x bluetick bloodhound mix.

Ike, you said "I think it's kinda funny that I get labeled as a redbone guy Frog, as I have as mixed bag of hounds as any western houndogger on the planet."

Uh, you are wondering how you got labeled as a redbone guy? Apparently you haven't read any of your own posts or looked at any of your own pictures over the past couple of years dude. ;) ;)

Here is a hint: You post that Where a Red Fern Grows link as many times as you have on these websites you are gonna be labeled a redbone guy. ;)

Arkansas, I'll tell you what I told Nolte. If there is a dog in my kennel it's because he was free. That is the secret to my program, I'm cheap. If it's free I'm interested. If it's not free, someone else can pay for it. :D

Every now and then I'll get soft hearted and give the guy a little money for dog food or shots or something, but I'm all about free dogs.

I do have one 14 year old dog still left in my kennel that I paid $50 bucks for but I was young and dumb back then. I have 8 dogs and I raised them all from pups and they were all free. That's my program. I'm cheap.

Around here a guy needs some speed for bears, but you also need some grit and staying power. Speed only gets them to the bear, doesn't make them climb. I don't have a real speedy pack, got some down right slow dogs in fact. Got a few who can move...

But I highly doubt I'm the guy to ask because all my dogs do these days is sit in the kennel and watch it snow and wait for feeding time. I'm semi-retired and thinking about full time hound retirement.

The less I hunt these days the more I'm getting to enjoy it. :D You better ask somebody that hunts amigo. :)

Dennis,

Actually, I just posted that clip from the newspaper site once, you were the one that posted it after that. :) Which worked out good for me since I had no idea how to find it again.

But if you are interested in donating some money to my favorite charity, we can make a friendly wager. I'll go find all the old posts where you've mentioned your Red Fern Grows story, and you go find all the times I've posted that newspaper link and winner take all... What do ya say buddy? Interesting in losing some money. ;)

On a more serious note, I knew you had mixed dogs but the past few years you have pushed the redbone breed pretty hard, so most people view you as a redbone man, right or wrong. But most people think I'm a bluetick guy and I only have 2 blueticks out of 8 dogs on my place.

Arkansas Frog, Sam was free and my buddy took his littermate that was every bit the dog he was. Those two dogs caught a lot of game, that much I know. It's funny, on these sites you hear a lot of talk about speed, or cold noses, or grit...

I believe it was 'ol VJ that said something to the effect "brains has caught a lot more game than grit ever did." And how come you never hear people talk about "heart"... ? Looking back, the dogs I got most attached to and caught the most game for me had one thing in common... they had heart.

Get run hard two days in a row by a running bear in this country and on day three you are going to find out which dogs have heart. And I guess ultimately I will choose heart any day over speed, nose, grit, whatever.

Same goes with horses for me. Day three you'll find out if your mount has any heart or not. I recall a back packing trip into the Wind Rivers for 10 days in my youth and come to think of it, we found out who had heart on that trip too. Can't remember if I did or not. ;)

Take care and happy holidays gang!
