As for keeping a specific cross of dog to be silent. Id say cross only silent dogs with other silent dogs (breeds of silent dogs). If your gonna have any open mouthed blood in your cross id keep it to a minimum. Less than a quarter. There are exceptions to every rule. Im sure somone in here will have plenty of examples of having what would usually be an open mouthed dog to be a silent trailer. As for my own crosses, Ive run catahoulas crossed with plott/kemmer/airedale. To catahoula/airedale. to catahoula/blackmouth cur. To catahoula/aussie shepard crosses. All have been silent. Im sure others will chime in as to whats worked for them.

bullbreeds & sighthounds do a lot to shut up a cross, but you have to think of what else they bring & do you want it.

I had a fine little plott cat cross half and half silent until he was eye to eye. I heared from old timers half and half is a 50% shot of a silent trail dog 1/4 75% chance of a silent dog I like 1/8.

I have done a lot of hog dog breeding. The one thing I can tell you is more bark more nose, less bark less nose (in most cases). I have a Catahoula that is silent but the man I got him from did genetic test and said there is walker in him. (That is why he has the nose, it’s got to come from somewhere.) He also had some plots tested and found walker in them also. He said the compitition coon hunters breed it in to get a better bark at the tree for tourniment hunting.

I expect my find dog to take any track made during the night. If you don’t want that kind of nose then you have a lot of different dogs to choose from. The one breed you can get some good nose without the bark is bird dogs. All breeds of pointer will work but some of the best hog dogs I ever owned were German Short Haired Pointes. They have around a 1 to 2 hr nose can wind excellent and you can’t run one down. They will also stop a hog and bay with the best.

I would breed a rough silent cur dog and a GSHP or a catch dog with GSHP.

Lost of people have opinions on dogs hope this helps its just what has worked for me.

Like the post above states bird dogs a good option I have currently some dog's 1/2 Pit 1/4 bird dog 1/4 Catahoula . I am gonna breed them back 1 more time to a catahoula or BMC hopefully to tone them down a little and im done I hope. The dogs I have really have to much pit they are just to brave cant run more than 2 at a time. Mostly I hunt 1 I like to have 3 dogs on the ground thats more noses sniffing but If they got to much help they will catch an elephant and wont bark on little hogs just grab them you hear the pig squeel more often than the dogs bark thats my gripe with them they hunt hard never hang around tough as nails med range decent noses.

I agree with bigboarstopper that the opened percentage of a dog should be 1/4 or less for your best chance having silent dogs and also with Jason that if you breed half and half, your chance is 50% of open/silent. All the dogs I hunt are silent on track and I wouldn't want to risk getting open dogs. There are plenty of silent breeds which have good noses but like Pops said, it all depends on what you want. Good luck to you.

if you want to breed hound in you might try trigg they tend to be tight mouthed until they jump

I agree with Lifreediver I would breed strong running dog, like the Goodman they seem to be tighter on the track and are very Gritty at the catch.

I have great luck going 50/50 Plott x cur or plott x Catahoula, most litters end up 8 out of 10 dogs silent and the other 2 semi open.

Those that have mucked around with hound blood over here usually only like quarter crosses , half crosses still are to open mouthed for us over here.
