leopard cur whats your opinion.

I got a leopard cur for christmas. The guy i got him from says he is suppose to be a nice dog but is seven months and hasnt done to much to impress me yet. Whats everyones opinion on this breed. Are they worth taking the time and making a dog or is it a lost cause?

Have you had this dog since Christmas? He is only seven months old? Supposed to be a nice dog? Pretty young to know what he is. Do you have other dogs? My pups are taught to come, lead, load up and generally just let them be pups. When they are around 6 to 9 months, depending on the dog, I start roading them with the older dogs, not really hunting, and as time goes by you will see how they are progressing, the desire they have to go with the big dogs, how they use their nose and their brains. Some leopards, just like other dogs, start early and others take a little longer. What isnt this dog doing that has you unimpressed? The thing with most leopards is not to get very rough with them and get them bonded to you. Yes they are worth the time and effort, and like with all dogs some wont make it. Let me tell you this, if you end up with a good leopard you will be looking for more. What line of leopard is this dog?

no i have seven other dogs and i should change my story around a little he was seven months when i got him at christmas so he is over a year now and i just have a hard time to get him going and to do anything he is a gentle dog and minds really nice but definitely not coming along like a lot of the other pups i think every dog deserves a chance and he fires good every now and again. His blood is out of kelly renolyds and i think he would make someone a nice pack dog. i was curious to hear what everyone had to say about the breed and what they thought. thanks

I have had two of them same litter from what I seen and been told by guy that have run them they are late starter. They seem to have alot of play in them. If you like curs I'm hunting MT. Curs now with striker blood in them. early starters and very smart and fast.

I've got a female lep cur. She's around 6. I got her cause the guy had to many dogs. She is silent on small game but will bay a bear hard. Fairly fast. I like her. I bred her to a waker/trigg. The pups would be if my math is right 1/4 trigg 1/4 lep cur and 1/2 walker. I kept one male and gave the others away. I havnt had him on game but when roading he is the fastest of my dogs. The two I kept track of are already hunting and doing good.

thanks for the input. he does have alot of play in him and is a big dog but dont have much speed. and just not my kind of dog. probably just going to get rid of him he fires good at coons and will tree if he can see the coon but just not impressing me much with the bear hunting.

I have a leopard cur I got from nick riley out of kalispel mt.I started hunting him on lions at 8 month he was leading all my races after the first few .I hunt with an older houndsmen by the name of speed tessier who has been running hounds for 45 yrs. he was impressed enough he bought his brother .He really likes his dog also.So I guess it depends on what line you got and even then nothing is 100%

I've been hunting leopards for around 8 years now. I still have a walker female but she is only here because she is the only dog I have that is straight on cats on the rig. I mainly hunt bobcats but when I get the opportunity, I'll take on some extra leopards for training durring the bear season. Most I've had were med.-fast to very fast. I've only seen one leopard that I would classify as slow. I have not had much problem getting them going on bear.

Like Sow Flat Slim said. Once you get a good one, you'll want more. You may have a cull, you may have a good one. Give it the chance to realize there is more going on out there than chasing other dogs tails. Once you've gotten that far you know what to do.
