hound hunting can be expensive as a hobby. there are many things to consider besides the cost of the hound which can vary from free to thousands of dollars. I am all for new hunters joining the sport and ensuring its future. however many new houndsmen leave the sport quickly because of a bad experience. the trick is avoiding the pit falls
1. tracking collar. this is a item many houndsmen make do with out. the advantage is of course being able to track the whereabouts of your hound. from the close proximity of some telemetry trackers to exact position with the gps units. these run several hundred dollars regardless of make or type and can be found advertised here on BGH.
The draw back is cost and some people use them as a crutch instead of requiring a well disciplined hound. a hound trained in simple obedience makes for a much more pleasant experience.
2. licenses not sure what type your referring to but assume a hunting license. I don't know what your states requirements are but most have youth licenses that are less expensive then adult. however there maybe restrictions. most western states have a small game or fur bearer license that are inexpensive usually less then $50.00. check your states hunting regulations and read carefully all things concerning legal hunting hours, firearms allowed, method of take/ limits, seasons, legal game animals, area, and the regulations surrounding the use of hounds. this would be a good time to contact a wildlife officer or fellow houndsman from your region. many areas will also require a dog licenses and proof of vaccination.
3. Some hounds bark from boredom and can be persistent. bark collars come in a few different types. the best is the collar which uses vibration and sound together as a trigger. it is also the more expensive type running nearly $100 per collar. the cheapest method of bark control is exercise and spending time with your hounds to keep it from becoming bored. This will also prevent many other very serious problems from popping up also.
4. you will also need a effective kennel for the hound if it's not kept in the house. a normal yard fence doesn't slow most hounds down much. hunting dogs of all types have a very strong roam and explore drive and can get in to a lot of trouble if allowed. a kennel isn't a storage place for your hound either. it should be a safe comfortable place for the hound to be while you absolutely can't spend time with it. to keep it from trouble or injury.
What sparked your interest in hounds and have you ever hunted with hounds? do you have friends or relatives who own hounds? will this be your first dog? I know, quit a few questions but the more we know the more we can do to help you. I would recommend that you invest in a good hound training book to help you learn as much as you can and get the most from the sport. in the book and video topics on here you will find list of some very good hound books. I recommend you purchase either "walk with wick" by. John wick.. or the book written by Vicki Lamb " Dynamics of hound training volume I" both of these books are filled with good information and cover most things pertaining to hounds and their care and training.
Remember that hounds are DOGS so if any information you receive seems to be contrary to logical dog training or care it's probably wrong!!!!
