New mule

After riding horses my whole life i switched to the dark side and i got my first mule. She's a pretty red dun with a dorsel stripe and tiger striped legs. Anyway i can't seem to keep my saddle where its suppost to be and was wondering who makes a good britchen?

I agree with LCK check out the saddle. If you have a saddle with a mule tree it will make a 100 percent diffeerence. here is a link to a pretty cheap but excelent saddle by Colorado Saddlery.

Look at the breeching I gave Tyler and Donnie. It was made for me by Scott Dierenger over 20 years ago and I have never seen a better one. Also I am sure you are riding a roping saddle knowing you. LOL! So you might want to invest in a mule treed saddle but in the mean time start playing with your pads, I bet you are padding up too much as if you were going to head steers. tinker around a bit with some lighter pads and make sure you pull a fake wither pocket up in them before you cinch final. Also full double rigs rid too close behind a mule's shoulder and if the slip up much you will gall the piss out of that donkey and you will be back to riding your horse. Set it back as much as possible with your breeching and then before you tightern all the way pick up the mule's front legs each and stretch them forward to build a little wrinkle slack pucker behind that shoulder and that seems to help some. I like a 5/8 to no more that 3/4 rig on a mule and no more than 7/8 but 3/4 is better even on a horse in rough country.

Mike, i can't follow Donnie on this damn sorrel horse! I have to pick cactus thorns out of places we don't want to talk about! Lol. I have been riding her in a handmade Gene Tunnel saddle with an association tree and have been crossfiring her. It would be different if she was gentle but she's kind of a goosey bitch and i'm gettin too old for that! Lol. I looked at that britchen you sent and i like it. Maybe when i get Scott to build me some leggins like he built Donnie i'll get him to make me a britchen too.

The best breechn I found are lined with neoprene. They are the only ones that I have used that wont rub the hair off and create sores when you ride them day after day.

The straps are made out of that Beta stuff. Not sure if that stuff will last as long as leather but I have had good luck with then so far.

old time mule man told the old man to set your back cinch back lot more than you would on a horse just a little more than in the picture of dogman68 and they get were they dont mind it being there and keep it reasonable tight not hanging it helps to keep the saddle from going forward some mule you can do this on and dont need a britchen on or a curpp on them we used a curpp more than a britchen if there not to mutton writherd

I totally agree with you catkid Coming back to the truck was steep downhill and my cinch was a little forward. I find that if you do a lot of riding and your mule gets toughened up to the cinch it is not all that critical but best to keep them cinched back more than a horse.

Hey folks have been riding these long eared abonations for some time and it ain't no puzzle. But just like hounds it's a shorter trip if you ask somebody that's been there.
