Horses and search and rescue

Postby cat and bear » Tue Aug 03, 2010 8:13 am

Well folks, after being asked for a couple of years, i finally joined equine search and resque, the law enforcements, are understanding, that a horse, or mule in my case, sit higher, are quiet, excellent hearing, and eye sight, and covers ground vs atv, or motorized vehicles. We have only two horse search and resque in wi, anyone else have knowledge or involved in such organizations, would love to share info.

We do a good bit of it out west. Very good way to go in my opinion. I will be doing a mounted cadaver dog search on the 14th in some canyon country. Sure does beat walking.

I was the SAR coordinator for Yavapai County in AZ and we utilized horses quite often. All aspects of SAR have their strengths. Horses can cover some dang good ground in very little time and they don't tire as quick as the guys on the ground. We had over 20 mounted members within our Search Members.
