Please Help, Coon Hound having problems

Post by walkerhoundsman »

Ok so here is the deal. first i tried coondawgs.com and cannot seem to get activated so i can not post there, so what i am saying is I am sorry if this is the wrong forum to seek help in coonhound training as i know it is intended for big game. here is the problem.

I have a 2 year old treeing walker. I can release a caged coon with out her seeing it in the day time and she will track it right to the tree and bark her head off. I took her out to see what she would do at night where i know there is a couple den trees. garunteed coon there. She wouldn't go more than 30 feet from me. I took her down to where i know the den tree is and she was very interested in the tree but would not tree. she was chewing the base and pawing it but would not tree. I was going to leave and she wouldn't leave the tree. had to take her away from it by hand. I know there were coon there right before us because of fresh tracks. I just don't understand 1. there was definetly a scent trail but she wouldn't leave me, and 2. when at a tree where the coon definetly are, why she wouldn't tree.

any ideas or tips on how to teach her or break her of these things? Season is coming up soon and i really want to have her ready. she has great blood lines, her mom is ranking minnesota state night champion and her dad took 5th so i know the blood is there. Yes i know that the blood line doesn't always garuntee a good dog, its just that she does awesome in the day but not at night. Please help Thank you very much

Try turning a caged coon loose in your hunting area, give it a half hour and turn her loose on the track, that way you know she's on track and she should get it going.

first hounds are pack animals i assume if she is two she hasn't been hunted prior. so her experience is to stay with people. this can be cured by hunting with a completely broke hound which she is familiar" kennel her together or near for a few days minimum " work or walk and play with other hound after dark.
was she sight racing the coon during daylight or did you allow her to see the coon turned loose? lay a trail with a live coon and check her on it to see exactly what is going on.
don't pull her from a tree she is showing hunt on let her work and encourage her your really only putting in the time and waiting for switches to click on.
read a proven training system and compare notes on what you have done or seen this may show a missed or wrong turn that you can work on good luck and there are coon hunters on here too.

Don't put any pressure on her. Take her for walks at night in the coon woods. If you get upset at her for not casting out she will get worse about it. If you didn't see a coon at that den tree, I bet there wasn't one there, but there probably was one there earlier. One night in the woods won't make a coon dog or any dog. Dogs that haven't been out at night need to get used to it. It sounds like she's a nice dog that's been over-handled and not hunted. Good luck and have fun. Not having seen the dog I'm just guessing about her issues, but if she runs and trees a caged coon, she's probably gonna be fine.

First thing i see is when you were at the den tree , the coon probably was'nt there at that time so she should'nt been barking on it anyway . I always make sure there is game in the tree before trying to get the dog pumped up on it , you don't want a false treeing fool . As far as track goes the track may not have been as hot as you thought , take a coon and release it at night and see what happens , hunt around cornfields now thats what the coon are feeding heavy on .

Thanks guys. She diid not see the cOon before I let her loose so I know it was scent tracking and not sight. I will definetly run her with another broke dog. I just need more patience I guess. Thank you for the quick responcees.

All these points are right on, I had the same issues with my first pup, so I bought another pup (1st mistake) but the good out of it was they ran out further and looked around more. I was turning my trainers out in front of them, the good and bad are just what these guys are saying, they are sight hunting, but when I would turn out the trainers, after awhile I would hold the dogs back for several minutes to let the race really heat up, then I did what you are doing and releasing and returning later. Holding the dogs back, they still are wired for sight, but after about 5 minutes they start "looking" with their noses, everything I did had good and bad, I do catch coons now and again when I am trying to hunt them, but what worked was I finally bought a finished broke hound and I hunt with other people with other broke hound and this really pushes my dogs to catch game. She sounds like a pup to me, nothing wrong with her from what you have said here.

take her and the caged coon at dusk and get a string on the coon's leg let her see it go up the tree and pull it back down and keep this up till she gets real fierce. then take her back to the truck where she can track the scent back cuz it then should be bout nite time then she should have got the point of the coon is up the tree with out her having to see it
