As a method of identifying which is better microchip or freeze brand? I would think chipping is better, but what do the rest of you prefer?

freeze branding IMO...its visible to the theif and may deter the hound from being stolen.
Chips are not seen therefor there is no deterent. Also there are several different chips on the market, most all shelters use the same manufacturer therefor they have the right gun but the vets do not.

I just ordered some from this site. The irons need to be think to hold the cold better, unlike traditional hot irons that I am use to and most people in agriculture are as well.
If you go to the UKC biggame forum...the breeder I bought some plott pups from puts a nice article on how to do it. with some photos

I like this option.. I have yet to get my dogs freeze branded but am working on it.. They will be done this spring.. I buy the micro chips and do it myself. Total cost is about 27.00 with the actual cost of chip and registering per dog.. It covers you on both ends since a shelter isn't going to do a darn thing about a freezebrand..nmplott wrote:also I prefer both due to if your hound gets lost and recovered by animal control or taken to a shelter your dog will be reunited with you due to the chip and of course freeze brands are hard to dispute.

Unless you have dogs with exceptionally large ears you should avoid the 2" brand from l&h. I bought the 2" and it really is to big for the hounds ears. All of mine are branded on the sides because of this miscalculation.
Don't buy the hype.
