White haired hound question
White haired hound question
My dog has white hair with pink skin around the eyes. How do I keep them from sunburning? I've heard of tattooing. Any advice on how to fix this problem.
Re: White haired hound question
The best solution I can offer is sun block. I would recomend 'baby' sunblock once a day in the 80-100 SPF and shade when possible.
Placing a tatoo that close to the eye will likely have detrimental effects to his vision in a few years, as it turns the area into scar tissue.
on the lighter side:You would of course have the coolest hound out there if you could teach him to wear sun glasses

sunblock is the answer when hunting and sun shades on the kennel. then remember how difficult it is to keep a pink hound from getting skin cancer in the future and select darker skin colors. if a hound is white but has dark skin they usually do fine at least as well as other hounds but the bright pink hounds do tend to develop it at three or four years old. i'm sure some people have never had this problem and some areas it probably isn't a issue. and not all pink skinned hounds get it but they are way more prone to it. check any place that has no or thin hair often.

Ok, I want to give an unprofessional opinion. If a dog has genes that make it sunburn and prone to cancer, then cull it or at least get it fixed. Lets make the future hounds free of this issue. I've heard some white dogs, probably the ones with dark skin, do better in the sun because lighter colors retain less heat. If they dog adds something valuable to your team then I'd keep it and deal with the skin problems. But, I would make it be the last of its line. I'm not putting your dog down or your program just making a suggestion on responsibility. What kind of skills does your dog have?

This pup is not completly white, he's ticked up with blue and red ticking. Got a black nose brown eyes but pink around the eyelids. He's the only one out of the whole litter that came out this way. As far as what he can do, I havnt started him on any game yet but have high hopes. The breeding is there.

I would be cautious, as I am willing to bet the goal for his lineage did not intend to incorporate the attributes that cause your concern. It may be for a reason he is the way he is?

well thats some real good writing, and I appreciate the advice, but it's not that big of concern for me. I think he'll turn out fine, I was just thinking of preventitive maintanence.
