GETTING SHOCKED DOG TO RUN GAME AGAIN

Post by cat hntr »

How do you get a young started dog to run game again. A guy I hunt with has a young dog that was started running game so he shocked him for running deer and elk . He only shocked him once on each now the dog wont run anything I can tell he wants to. I tried to help him out by walking his dog on the track and taking it to the tree with the other dogs . He finally barked a little bit at the tree. I told him him I would take the dog if he gets rid of him because the dog really wants to go but just acts a little confused about what he wants him to do.

Some dogs are pretty sensitive to the electricity, you might try and use a caged coon to get him going then turn the coon loose and let him watch it run off, give it 5 minutes and let the dog trail and tree it, it might take a time or two but it should get him over the electricity.

I've been there before!

First take the shock collar of and don't use it for awhile.

Then, be easy in your scholding in your training of your dog. Let him get back to trusting you and his instincts to hunt--this may take a while, but I've had two dogs that did come out of this!

Both of the dogs I had were "gamey"===they wanted to hunt. Problem I had, the cats were not co-operating. I could not get a cat started nor treed for 6-8 weeks? The young dogs started running coyote & deer--bad!! A little hit didnot phase them, and they would sure run that off game. SO--I turned on #6 and stopped that--one took twice and the other took 4 times.

But then I had your problem--they would not leave, even though they wanted to do so, but would just stay right with me.

Now one of them is one of my better strike & tree dogs at 2 year old past and the other will only run bobcat or lion. This didnot happen over night though and for 2-4 months I thought they were ruined for sure.

Good luck with your hound.

What is the age of the young dog? Time will make a difference.

trash breaking is a double edged sword with the e-collar. the trick is not getting there in the first place. use deer scent in small wire hot cages when pups are 3-4 months old in the yard to get the idea across what scent it is that causes the problem. to fix it use your broke hounds to fire the pup back up on a trainer or two. if this doesn't work do as recommended and ease off for a while. then try again.
i got a two year old one time who would bay a cage, tree a drag and run a super hot track but wouldn't range out and hunt with the pack. he would get worked up like hell and pace and whine until the others were almost treed. I finally broke down and necked him to another hound and let them deal with it for a week or so around the house before i took them out again. they hunted like this for a while and he would go out farther but would start pulling back. once we got a track going he went and worked fine. when i unnecked them he still made it a point to be right next to his buddy for a long time after. He turned out to be a real smart hound not the best tracker but a good thinker and amusing to watch.

I thought i would add that I don't like necking hounds and almost never do and only recommend it if you put a tracker on them and stay right close keeping a eye on them. so none of the hundreds of bad things that can happen don't
