Brood bitch???

Post by nodge »

What does this term mean I have heard it used by breeders and they always use it in a negative sense?
Thanks
John

Josh is absolutely right....Sometimes when a breeder stumbles on one particular female that breeds well (throws good pups) with one or more different males they will put her on the shelf and make her a brood bitch.

I have a different philosophy on that though. I want the female to prove herself first in the woods before she is breed. Once she has done that then she will be breed but never she will never be shelved till her next breeding regardless how good the pups turn out. The whole reason for having hounds is to enjoy them in the field not have countless numbers of puppies.

I agree with Spanky 100%, if ya got them ya gotta hunt them. Hey Spanky; I've got a friend up in your country that has a couple of my stock of dogs and I was wondering if you know him George Frisby, he lives around Seely lake somewhere, if ya do and you see him tell him I said howdy. Have a good1, Mike

Spanky...have you ever had a brood bitch that just didnt hunt worth a damn but had all the right genes, I had one get bred before I could get rid of her ...and she throws the best hunting pups, I hope it was the way the man trained her or the lack of trainning he gave her.

Not that I dont agree with you all that the mother and father should hunt and be good at it .. I just think that sometimes we might overlook a great cross because of human mistakes and not natures

We had a redbone bitch that wouldn't run anything but a deer. She'd run em hard tho. Turn her loose with the pack on a bear and the first thing she'd do was go find a deer- never took any of the other dogs with her tho. The dog could run for days... literally! She exhausted more than one deer to its death. We bred her to one of our plott males that was good at everything, but was a little on the slower side than we liked. The pups we got outa that litter were awesome. One was a lead dog that would do it all completely alone at 15 months. She got killed by a fightin bear at 3 years because some idiot turned 12 dogs (i'm not kidding, 12 dogs) into our race (we had 5 dogs). She got pinned between the bear and 4 other dogs and couldn't get out of the way fast enough. Still have her sister tho and she is a great runnin and treein dog even at 12 years old, she hasn't lost her endurance or speed by much more than a smidgon! Didn't have to break either pup off trash either, just ran them enough on the right game I guess. Got some great dogs, but got rid of the redbone anyway without making the cross again.

I'm not saying that poor hunting females may not have the right genetics to produce quality litters but I myself would rather not gamble and risk a whole year of raising and training not to mention any of those folks that may get a pup that will be looking for refunds. I only put 1 litter maybe 2 on the ground every other year.
Unfortunately we do not have the ability to grade a hounds genetics and all first time litters are a gamble but I would rather gamble on proven hunting parents is all. I have seen what I call a cull female produce some top notch pups though

Mike I have heard good things about George and I believe my buddy AJ has one of his pups. Seeley is 50 miles south of me, I do not hunt much down there anymore.

This happens alot. And if you study the genes and gene pool, they say that you are pulling from the grandparents so you may get good pups out of your nonhunting female but it will catch up with you in your breeding program. You breed a female out of that female and your chances of bad pups are very high. That is why guys like to breed good hunting females, it increases your chances of good litters if you are always breeding your best to your best, and a good breeder will try to double his chances by linebreeding these good dogs in a pedigree.
A brood bitch that is nonhunting that produces good pups may just be the end of a good breeding program
