Puppy Question?

Post by yeager »

Well, I got me a knew plott pup and I am limited at the moment on the abilities to take him out with me because he doesn't have all his shots yet... The Vet says keep him at home until he is 4 months due to parvo.

What's the going opinion on your guys and gals out there in regards to keeping your pups at home away from the public areas due to parvo?

Have any of you lost a pup to parvo for that reason?

Would you take your pup out prior to all his shots?

how old is he? did he get his 6 week set? I personally wouldn't worry about it, but have never had a problem with parvo, have friends that have. Vaccinate him and do what u want would be my plan

He is 11 weeks and completed three series of shots, he has one more left to be fully vacinated for parvo.
Thanks for the response...

Vaccinating a puppy before it is 8 weeks old is a complete waste of time. I don't know of a Vet that reccomends them before then. Unless it was an unvaccinated mother, that the pups didn't get to nurse on, in a parvo prone area, then a "parvo only" could be given at 6 weeks, but it's still almost always useless. Just read the manufacturers' instructions. They should have them no earlier than 8 weeks, then 3-4 weeks apart, and the last one should be on or after 16 weeks old.

Mine are done at 8, 11, 14, and 17 weeks old. I will take them "safe places" with me after the 2nd - 3rd shot.

Also be sure of how your vaccines are handled. Get them from a Vet or someone you know for a fact get them straight from the Manufact. and store and handle them properly. Don't skimp and buy feed store vacc cause you can get them for a couple dollars less.

I work at a Vet's office. I watched 3 puppies ranging from 10 weeks - 5 months old come down with parvo this week! Because "the breeders already gave them the puppy shots from a feed store"

Play it safe.... your hound can pick up all kinds of things before he's fully vacinated. There are a lot of things other than Parvo.

Trust me on this one you've done great being patient as you are. You only have a lil while longer and he'll be fully vacinated. It's worth it to wait a lil while longer.

Next to a child or family...you don't wanna lose a pup.

Good luck!
