Well I have stayed on the sidelines with this Thread as there have been some very good Posts.

This Topic is like which Hounds to use Treebred or Running Dog.

Again it depends on the Country that you Hunt. I hope that the Video Clips and Pics that I post will give some insight into how thick and Bad the Cover is in Parts of the Country. Dad does not have a real good kill Dog right now....but it would not matter if he did....some of the country is too rough for the Hounds to get to the Cat to Kill It! Hell I can not get close enough to apply a Hickory Whack!

A big Tom or Sow for that matter, can get backed up against a stump or log with Palmettos, TyTy's, Gallberrys and Bamboo Briars around them and a Hound just can not get to him. When the Hound does it is like grabbing a Buzz Saw with blades on six different Axises. When only one Hound can reach a Cat, it is either a very Brave or very STUPID Hound who is willing to sacrifice themselves so the Pack can stretch the Cat.

Mr. Dewey refers to B.S. Jones's book on Florida Cat Hunting...while some locals thought that his initials were appropriate....others say that he was the Real Deal! The Stories he tells about the Big Bad Toms could be just about repeated today in Dixie and Taylor Countys!

The country in WI that I saw in July while watching Cat & Bears Hounds do Yoemans work on Bear is darn sure thick and Bad enough for a Himedin Cat to give Hounds a fit.

A Bobcat is EASILY killed but getting him where he can be killed in thick heavy cover can be DAMN Hard!

My experiance with it has been..... bobcat not hard to kill if the dogs can get a hold on it quick, but the longer the fight the more stitches you're gona pay for. bobbers can stick and move, ball up on a dogs head, slash the shit out of a dog, etc. pound for pound, they are brutal fighters. coons are a lot harder to kill, and coyotes is a whole different ball game. the question was how tuff is a bobcat, not how tuff is a coyote. my answer is that a bobber can beat the crap out of your dogs on any given day, or the dogs might just end it quick. but no doubt a bobber is tough.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

At that point, I hate to admit it, but I then doubted everything else he had said up to that point. I just have never seen it.

It seems logical, and I have sure had my forearm scratched by a house cat kitty doing that very thing, but I just have never had a dog badly injured by a bobcat. I have had my dogs kill a lot of bobcats on the ground, much to my dismay. Our cat season is snow season, and dont like to put down on a track that wont lead to at least 30 pounds of bobcat.

I cant comment on coyote, because I have never hunted them with dogs. But I will say this; our bobcats get big, but our coons actually can get just as big, and I would rather my dog fight a bobcat to the death, than to fight a coon of similar weight to the death. That dog MIGHT eventually beat the big coon, but the dog will be COMPLETELY exhausted. I have never seen that kind of hunt stopping exhaustion from a bobcat kill.

There is nothing I have hunted that seems as fragile as a bobcat. I wish they did not die so easily. And I wish I could find dogs that could hold a bobcat tightly bayed, but never ever kill it. They are valiant fighters and well equiped with cutting tools, but somehow, just not very tough in my opinion. I wish they were.

I have hunted and trapped a lot of them years ago and even kept one as a pet and used the uriine for trapping (great pet).
They are tougher than most think.
I shot one on the ranch about 20 years ago with a .357 at 40 yards with 147 gr, jacketed hollow point in the shoulder.
I tracked it in the brush about 100 yards before all sign dissappeared. No blood on brush, ground, grass, nothing.
I never found him. I remember the shot because all I had available was a small V shaped portion available through the brush and it was a good shot. Well centered about 3" below the back and 3" behind the neck.
I had shot javalina etc, with that round at that distance and it always worked, not that time.
Oiler coach Bum Phillips when asked why he takes his wife on all the road trips.
Phillips: “Because she is too damn ugly to kiss good-bye.”
Not sure if it's true, just funnier than hell. A been there done that moment.

I remember one of my plotts got a tom one time and bit her back leg where the ankle was and it swelled up to be the biggest damn cankle I have ever seen and took for ever to kill that infection.... cats are deadly even after they are dead.

A coyote has to be chocked out finally
A good kill cat dog can kill a cat quick, lot quicker than a coyote.
A cat dog will get a few cuts but, a cat can,t stand to be bitten in the midsection.
A cat dog that is not afraid to get bit or scratched a little will grab the cat take the air right out of them.
Very few straight trail hounds can kill a coyote by them selves.
but a lot can kill a bobcat by them selves. This is on average coyote & average bobcat. 40 lb bobcat can be vrry tough & a 50 lb coyote can be tough. I caught a 62 lb coyote one time.
Just my 2 cents worth

In my opinion unless you have mint catch snow, it takes a good dog to catch and bay either a coyote or bobcat. It just doesn't randomly happen unless the critter is sick.

Now on which one is tougher, I think a yote is tougher but a cat is more likely to rip up a dog (and get infection) after the fact. I can count on one hand the # of dogs I know that stretched a coyote by themselves. And it sure wasn't no big dog coyote either. Seen quite a few two dog tandems that made short work though. I know a few more dogs that have done it with cats, but it still ain't no big number.

I've seen a LOT more dogs that weren't even close to good enough to get the chance to battle one solo. Like about 15 times.

Now if it was me grabbing the critter, I'd pick the yote 100 times over having to wrangle a pissed off bobcat. But I'm pretty soft. :D

Our bobcat and coyotes must be a lot easier out here. Unless the dogs can't get to the cat they will kill it quickly. I have even had the dogs go one on one into a 12" culvert and kill a bobcat more than once. I had four young dogs in the early 80' that made a great cat pack. Until I got them broke they caught and killed several coyotes. If a coyote got in a hole or under a log he could fight them off. They killed 5 one week. They were just treeing walkers and 1/2 trigg and 1/2 julys. Dewey

Man I wish I could say I've had dogs kill a cat on the ground cuz I'd sure as hell like to chime in but facts are I aint never done it. If the dogs I'm currently feeding couldnt kill one though with ease you can damn sure bet they wouldnt come home with me.

I know it varies with different areas. In Your area Dan I have not hunted but have talk to good hunters and cat hunting is a different ball game there. I would like to try it some time just to see how these dogs raised out here would do. Good hunting. Dewey
