Man says wolves killed hunting dog, wounded another
KALISPELL, Mont. - A Flathead Valley man says wolves killed one of his hunting dogs and severely wounded another during a recent mountain lion hunt west of Kalispell.

Joe Kerney said he was hunting on New Year's Eve when he released two grown hounds and a pup on a mountain lion track in the Rogers Lake area.

"They went up this draw and it sounded like they had a cat treed," he said. "All of a sudden, I heard a dog fight going on."

Kerney said two of his dogs ran toward him. One was injured and a third didn't return. During his search, Kerney spotted tracks and signs that wolves had bedded down in the area.

"You could see in the tracks that they heard the hounds coming up the draw and you could see where they made a direct beeline down to the dogs," he said.

Kerney later found the carcass of his third dog, Harley, in a boulder field.

Kent Laudon, regional wolf management specialist with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, said the encounter probably involved the Hog Heaven Pack moving into the extreme northern end of its territory.

"It sounds pretty classic what happened to Joe," he said. "They heard the barking and they head down. From their mind it's a territorial thing."

Seems like a person should make a tape of dogs Treed up and play it while out for a walk in the woods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Fella told me nobody has been prosecuted for killing wolves as none are pure breed,only hi-breeds, I have been unable to find where anyone as went to the mat for killing wolves.If anyone knows of a case please enlighten everyone. Thanks, Sam

My neighbor got hammered for two of them. He was setting on a bear bait stand and three wolves came in, they new he was up there but would not leave. Started getting dark so he stood up and waived his arms at them and the biggest one walked up to the base of his tree and stood there looking at him, then turned and went back to the bait. He said he started helling at them but they would just look over at him then go back to eating so he said he shot the biggest one and when it started yelping the other two jumped it then went back to feeding like nothing happened so he whacked another one and the last one ran off. I can't remember what it cost him but it but it wasn't cheap, and he lost his big game hunting privileges for three years. He should have listened to everyone and went with the three S's, Shoot, Shovel, And Shut-up.

I dont know about where you live but around here you only believe one out of every ten stories you hear and only believe half of what you see.

when armed with a firearm I thought nobody ever saw wolves. You can't shoot wolves but you can shoot really BIG coyotes. Leave them alone if they have jewelery around thier neck!!

I don't know if this is what happened but I'v seen Wolf Tracks in light and deep snow and if you don't look close enough they at times can and will look like Lion Tracks!! I hat the thouhgts that he turned his dogs in on some wolfs let alone thay took the track. Like I said I don't know if that is what happened but it would not surprise me.

Their tracks look simular to cat tracks but the wolf track is more of a dimond shape and you can see the claws in the track where as you know a cat track is more round without the claws. Word has it that they are opening up wolves up here next year if they get delisted by the feds! They are opening it up where everone can buy a tag but they set a limit and you have to keep up on the quotas to be able to take one! They said the quota will be 130 for the state of MT. The projected season will be from Sep 15th to Nov 30th.....and only hunters can take one with a tag not trappers or anyone else! Anyway I for one will buy a tag and everyone in the family as well!

I have seen some while I was out and about hunting or antler hunting but they havent ever been agressive in my experience!

Not the case here Luke. I have hunted and helped Joe in the past, he knows what he's doing. The cat was treed and in the tree when he got there.

We have tried to deal with FWP to try and prevent happenings like what took place over by grangeville area last year. Our problem is the communication and the where abouts of these buggers. We have a FWP meeting next saturday and the tentative hunting regulations are already drawn up with season prices just no dates yet.

They will be treated like any other big game animal except they will be on a quota system throughout the regular big game season so harvests can be regulated.

I have hunted with Luke for several years and we have both seen guys turn out on Wolf tracks. i think that we both diffenately know the difference between a cat track and a wolf track. one point that i would like to add is that most of these hound hunters were not new to the game that turned out on wolves.

They don't look the same at all...my 11 year old boy can see the difference.

Cat..Dog!! Definately two different critters with different tracks. There tracks don't look the same at all. All I was saying in my post earlyer is there are some people I know that have turned in on wolf tracks!!!!! I have seen there tracks AT TIME look similar!Have I personaly done it? No. Am I a track expert with a degree? No. But I have been doing this a long time and hope that accounts for something!!!

there a pain in the ass,here in wy killed my buddy's good hound two years ago,are big game hunting.has taking a big hit as well,there in the big horns mtn. now,if we don't control of them soon,things are going to get worse,before they get better! S.S.S.

Not the case here Luke. I have hunted and helped Joe in the past, he knows what he's doing. The cat was treed and in the tree when he got there.

There is a very distinct differance in the two tracks and a novice or beginner may make the mistake but not in this case.

horshur i'm not saying that they look the same. i know the difference between a cat track and a wolf track but i have seen several other people swear up and down that a wolf track was a cat track and turn out and they were not new to the game at all which puzzels me
