house cats and hounds
How many of you guys have a house cat and how are your hounds around it !
My little red dog tango goes nuts and chases it,got in to a few rumbles with it and the old lady is getting mad at me lol
I'm sure it will change in awhile was just wondering if you guys have the 2 livin together under the same roof!!

The cats are just very careful and only come home when it gets dark, but i think it was the best thing for my pups because they learned to trail it at a young age. All the older dogs are kennelled up or i think they would kill the poor cats. But we do let the pups run around and every once in awhile would get a cat race going. It is fun to watch the pups work on a cat trail.

Re: house cats and hounds

this was my best cat dog ive ever had. but loved the ol ladies cat. i lost that dog a few years back. my blueticks now would have that cat in about 10 parts. my ol lady feeds a few cats outside. no clue whos they are but ive been buying cat food for em for about 6 months now. but i went out one night a few weeks ago to feed the dogs and they were in the dog houses so i went back out around to turn the water on. by the time i got back around the corner my female was baying every breath inside her dog house. i went in and that cat was inside her dog house. must of slipped in there while she was sleeping and walked into the wrong kennel hahah. i pulled her out and that cat come outta there and up over the side of the kennel and was out of there. i cant believe she didnt kill it but wasnt letting it leave for sure. i thought it was funny. the ol lady on the other hand did not.

Re: house cats and hounds
I might be wrong, but I've taught my hounds not to chase ANYTHING unless I tell them to. In the mornings when I'm going hunting I let my two older hounds off their chain to run around and empty out before I load them up and quite often my house cats will come out and say hello. Nothing happens unless I give them the "sicum". My pups will harass them until I make them stop. I don't know if this is wrong, but it keeps the peace around the homefront. If a ferrel cat shows up the older dogs will expode and would love to kill it, but the house cats don't seem to bother them at all.

This crew that I have right now would love to put the hurt on the cats. My old pack of dogs wouldn't even look at a house cat. I think it has a lot to do with how you raise them. I just added 5 dogs to my deal that I didn't raise, that's why the cats get the stink eye.

I don't know about the younger dogs but my older ones won't mess with them. Where I lived before the neighbors house cats would walk the fence and kennel. Dogs didn't even act like they were there. Take the same dogs in the woods and they go crazy for cats.

Re: house cats and hounds
I've always had a cat around the hounds.. Never really had much of an issue.. I don't want my hounds chasing housecats so I don't encourage the younger dogs to do it and the older dogs just leave the cat alone.. Do I trust my dogs around a cat.. No way..

Have an Erickson bred ursus plott that my friends daughter wanted to smother when he was about 8 weeks old, they have 2 housecats, i figured at that age he wouldn't even get too concerned with em. left him with their daughter and went lion hunting, came back that night and got the whole story about how he checked the cats out curiously for a min and next thing they knew the cats hind quarter was in the pups mouth and he wouldn't let got. Suited me just fine.
Re: house cats and hounds
i've had some of both. some don't care about cats one way or another and some can't leave them alone one way or another. i've had two who loved cats rolled around played with them and couldn't leave them alone. one still acts that way at nine years old. the other walked past the wheel on the truck and a feral tom was sleeping on the tire and got spooked slapped him, actually had three claws left in the hounds face after words. but ruined hound cat relations forever. I haven't seen it mean a hound is better or not as far as how it behaves around house cats.

Scout 20' up a tree trying to get a cat

I dream of having some cat dogs in Iowa, this is as close as I will get for a few more years.
They have opened a Bobcat season in the southern part of the state and there was a Mountain lion shot 20 miles down the river from where I hunt and several sitings over the years in the area.
I don't encourage the chasing of cats they just do it on the own when running loose. We have cats in the house and out side along with pups in the house from time to time and after a while there is truce worked out among the inside cats and the pups, the cats have learn to stand there ground.
Oh and so far we have not treed one out hunting, so far.

Re: house cats and hounds
No such luck here. The cats that have made it into the yard.... well
Guess they had used up all the 9 lives before dropping by
Sorry, I couldn't be in the back yard 24/7 for the lil criters
For the record.. I never cared much for cats
