All I ever hear from you northern guys is that it sucks up there? How so? I'm not starting a pissing match, I'm just curiouse. Looks to me like you guys get an ass load of snow from oct- june. the mountains up there are huge, tons of deer, elk, canyons, cliffs, etc. why does it suck so bad?

All of you guys that don't like the hunting where you are, come down to the desert in NM, AZ, & TX. The hunting is fantastic!!! Don't come down here and expect to just drive out early some morning and go to catching a truck load of lions though. As I said, the HUNTING is fantastic!! With the right dogs, and enough miles going around in circles, there's even the possibility of catching a lion now and then. The good thing is that you get to watch the dogs work. AND you don't get snow where snow shouldn't get!

We have great snow up here houndnem, probably the best in the state. All those other things you mentioned are true as well. The problem is that we don't have any lions left anymore.........years of over harvest has seen to that. I haven't checked in the last couple of years, but I know the Cache unit had the lowest number of lions treed per hunter day than anywhere else in the state despite all the great snow and everything else.

Unfortunately, good tracking condition also means good killing conditions for those that don't care.....and there are a couple of houndsmen that kill everything they put up.

Kev
With the new DWR proposals....it ain't gonna get any better either. Benny....we may just take you up on that offer :) Least a guy ain't gotta wade through arse deep snow...and I'd get my pony legged up too. AND a guy could catch as many kitties....
With all do respect the snow conditions make catching alot easier....that's why there ain't many cats left.

almost every unit in the south end of the state has overkilled on quotas for as long as I can remember. I have drove all day for a week strait and never cut a track! sounds like your lion numbers up there are the same as down here. I've seen on two or three ocasions down here where a bitch and two kittens are harvested as three lions! it's bullshit, no doubt about it, and it aint getting better. when I go out and cant find tracks or there are 5 sets of tire tracks down a road at 3 o'clock in the morning it is discouraging to say the least. but I lace up and head out on foot. almost always can find a lion in the back country to chase, you've just got to earn it. you guys have more back country than you know what to do with, you just can't ride around in the comfort of your pickup to get to it. I know the lion numbers in all the "good spots" suck statewide, but rest asured there are some booner cats that lived to be that big because they don't cross roads that much. burn snickers bars instead of gasoline and I'll bet you find that the lion huntin don't suck so bad up there after all!

Belive me brother I have wore out my fair shair of snow shoes, snow mobiles etc. I don't just hunt down here, I hunt the whole state top to bottom. that's how I know the cat situation is piss poor from top to bottom just the same. I spend the majority of my time in south central utah up around piute county. I used to turn down several tracks before I found the one I wanted to chase. now if I see a scuff that might be a feline I dump the box cuz I might not get anything better that day. I'm still puttin cats up though cuz I guess it is what you make it, I just get tired of hearing how much worse you guys have it up there than we do down here. you want to tree a cat you still can anywhere in the state, it just aint gona be as easy as it used to be.
I think the guys that are mostly guilty of slaughtering females and young lions are the new guys that have worked hard and are finally starting to catch. I was the same way my first couple seasons, but it seems like anybody who has done this any legnth of time and wants to continue doing it realizes the importance of consearving females and young. How do we reach the newbies and let them know they are killing off a way of life? especially when they get high fives from all the deer hunters and cattle guys at the coffee shop. How can we accomplish a female sub quota here in utah?

Rigit- Sweet pics. I bet you worked for those cats. I hunted the Cache hard, for years and it sucks!

Houndnem- You have no idea what you're talking about! Call Kev and go teach him how to hike for lions and get off the beaten path.

He might share some tips with you as well. If you can pry him away from Carla, at Hawn's... He could use a lesson.

Take care.
