Ha Ha Ha, that would be like hunting bassett hounds on bears. Interesting to poor comparison though, I see athletic thuroughbreds winning horse races, not the budweiser clydesdales
The build of your dogs?
Re: The build of your dogs?
i aint talking huge dogs, about 60 to 70 lbs. and you dont see ponys winning horse races either.

Re: The build of your dogs?
yeah but a thoroughbred is a long legged athletic horse, it isnt a small breed. a larger more athletic dog has a longer stride than a smaller dog and will cover more ground quicker than a smaller dog with the same build.
40lb dogs!
i wouldnt own a dog that was only 40lbs, not for hunting bear anyway. that is just my opinion. but a 40lb dog has no room in my pack.

I know you western guys like the small dogs for your area and style, they simply dont do well in the muck, swimming and water. If you catch a couple of bear with them, forget the next day. This build works the best around here and consistantly catch bear.

Re: The build of your dogs?
I don't care what dogs look like as much as I care what they can do. I have seen some dang ugly, poorly built dogs that can slick game. Of course there is something to be said about a good looking well built dog that can also catch game.
When this topic came up, the first thing I thought of is that picture that Cat and Bear just posted. Dogs that look good and produce, nothing wrong with that. I would love to have a fine looking pack of hounds like that, for now I will have to settle for the ugly ones I got.
Mine may be hard to look at but sure are great to listen to!

Some one better cut the ropes off the box before thats at the tree too
is that those july hounds?
Heres an alright example, the english looking dog is kinda of a short and stocky dog but he's one of the fastest dogs I've ever seen.

George funny story, about 25 years ago, I called on a broke beagle in Indiana. The fellows name was merelle crane. The beagle really interest me, but it came to the final question, I said merelle, how is the dog built, is he good looking. "He said son, let me tell you something, if its a woman on the end of my chain, or dog, there both going to be good looking" I've always kind of lived by that

I agree with Jeff. I like the running dog look. These arent great pictures but this is my type of dog. The female is probably about 35 lbs and the male about 40.

As a woman I think that's one of the reason's I have to have a pack of good looking hounds, to make up for some of my shortcomings.
The dogs in my yard range from 45-70 lbs. 55 lb dog is ideal to me. My two fastest dogs on a jump are my 70 lb male and my 45 lb female. When they cross on a track, you could swear they are coupled together. They are only a slight bit faster than my 65 lb female, and on an average track, all three of them are going to be right together.
Tight, well padded FEET, and deep well sprung ribs/lungs are the most important to me. Straight, well boned legs and a strong longer sloping topline come next. Wrap that up with a nice square houndy head and ears, slick coat, and a nice tailset, and that's what I'm looking for.
Re: The build of your dogs?
I have had some pretty un-athletic looking hounds show up the most athletic hounds I have! all my hounds are from 38-55 pounds some very well built hounds that can travel, Feet are a must! if they can't make it 3-4 day's when they are at their toughest then whats the use? If you can afford feeding 20 hounds then I guess it does not matter. the old timers made some tough hounds and were able to hunt day end day out with out rotation. They bred damn tough hounds... I would rather have a wolf footed hound than one that slips their pad every time they are on a average hunt... Cat footed does not mean tough footed. Hunting will tell you what each hound can take and it's up to you to make the determination on each dog if they can't make it then why feed them? Breed for what you want and move those you don't... breed for the best. and the rest will be history!
