how often do your lion dogs trash on bear?

how often do you turn out on a lion or bobcat track and your dogs cut a bear track and follow it? or vise versa your bear dogs cut off on a cat track?

It can happen when a kill gets thrown into the equation.

Usually bear scent is so strong. The dogs don't slow down long enuff to worry about running a cat...if the was started on a cat and they cross a bear they will most likely quit the cat to run the bear.

Usually happens to me in March when the bears come out. Catch a couple of bears in march when i'm lion hunting. I Cant hardly hunt lions in oct,nov in bear country around here because I cant keep my dogs off of bears long enough to find a lion track.

Never had them pull off of a bear track for a lion tho.

It happens when the dog(s) like bear more than cat. With well trained(experienced) dogs it won't happen. I've seen multi purpose dogs where a bobcat walks on a fresh bear track for a while and when the bob leaves the bear trail the dogs keep on the cat and tree it. Great dogs stick on the trail you put them on and catch it. No offense to dogs that do jump tracks onto other good game. It is just the difference between good and great(trained or natural) dogs according to thier experiences and training. Dogs will choose what they are most comfortable doing. Consistancy and repetition are what make a good hound reliable. Their ability to catch what they are put on is what makes them great. Never underestimate what your dog is capable of. If you do, you will never build a better dog. This is just my opinion.

Here in Montana we don't have a bear chase season but while I was roading dogs on the frozen bare ground in april this year we had a ripper of a strike(too fast and furious for a lion start). I was about to start pushing buttons but they hadn't been on trash all season, and we looked around for any sign. There was a little bit of frost and finally made out a little black bear track. They ran the track way up the mountain and finally after about 2 hours treeing switches were going off. I had already been hiking for about an hour but it took another 2 hours to get to the tree way in that canyon. I was kind of excited to see a bear after seeing dozens of cats all season but was let down when a little female lion was getting screamed at by those blue dogs. Where they switched? I don't know but either way it was a good day. I don't reckon I would call it trashing on bear unless you've got them shocked off of it. At least that is how I think their brain would perceive it. (that is if you are free casting to start tracks imo)

last spring was runnin with old neff and we had bear goin and got tree readings, so we headed into the tree. when we got there sure enough had a nice boar in the tree, but we had a few dogs not there. Took a reading on them and they were treed also, so we headed up to them thinkling we had two bears caught. When we got there we were pleased to see a big old tom way up in the top of a big old pine. They can trash on lion any day. Neff, I heard you guys killed this weekend where's the pics.

Nimmer was trained soley on cats for the first 18 months or so, he has on a few occasions ditched a pretty warm bear track for a colder cat track (both lion and bobcat). Its hard when he does that because my brother and I usually are expecting a bear hunt and he will be running cat and that is my preferred hunt so I dont reprimand him even if it takes all day (and then some) to catch the game.
