Well imma buy a cheap sled for this year. I have a 05 skidoo rev 800 I'm thinking of selling to get a new atv with trax. How is the speed of the trax on snow. My buddy says he covers more ground with his sled than his trax. But I'm thinking better space on the atv and a winch would be better for solo hunting... getting stuck on a sled stinks... especially alone.
I really want to hear ideas.
my debate.... atv trax or sled
Re: my debate.... atv trax or sled
I have both a sled and a 4x4 with tracks. Yes, you can cover a lot more ground with a snowmobile, but you can get around a lot easier on a tracked 4x4 when you don't have enough snow to get everywhere. And if you are pulling a box you get stuck more with a snowmobile. If you get a 4x4 be sure you get a winch on it.

Tracks are definantly slower but in tight and curvey mountain trails are nice and go alot of places however most people will tell you that there not hard on atv's i disagree mine 07 suzuki 700 was in great shape till last winter when i put tracks on it had 12 cracks in the frame this spring 3 were total break throughs maby i'm just hard on things but i don't think so would i buy another set proubly not for now any ways good luck
IT'S HARD TO SOAR LIKE AN EAGLE WHEN YOUR AROUND TURKEY'S ALL DAY!!!
Re: my debate.... atv trax or sled
for what you pay for and atv with tracks you can buy an ATV AND a really nice used mountain (long track) sled that will be much harder to get stuck and run circles around an ATV with tracks - speed and gas mileage wise.

I have both and I'm going to say, you need both. I'm currently running an Arctic Cat, King Cat 900 with nitrous. Two Kawasaki quads 650cc, one with tracks. Sleds are faster and great in more gentle terrain. Their downfall is difficult to turn around in tight places. Hard on the tracks and Hyfaxes in the dirt. Tracks are slower, use more fuel, need at least a 500cc machine (preferably 700cc minimum) and power steering would be nice. They are hard to turn and are heavy and it does take some time to put them on. Point is, you're not going to put them on just for one day and then remove them. The advantage, they will go anywhere and are almost impossible to get stuck. But if you do manage to get them stuck, its going to take you a long time to get out if you are by yourself (carry a come-a-long). Most tracks can go all day in the dirt but they are very rough riding in the dirt. I've had mine on my Kawasaki going on 5 years now and no problems with the machine.

Re: my debate.... atv trax or sled
This is the MILLION dollar question I have had for a long time too.
I have not seen first hand if these tracks will climb a good incline in wet snow (1'-2' we get the worst of the snow)
I have a hard time believing they will and have not seen any video or pic showing them climb any roads like this.
We have one flat road at the base of every mountain, along each lakeetc and spur roads that wind up, often cross ditched.
Take a 700cc (I have a grizzly) with 30% gear reduction, add 3-4 dogs and a box and it would seem to me that extra power of the sled might be needed?
I've been on the fence with this for 2 years now and need to make a decision !
If you guys with tracks have any video or pics of steep climbs you've made, I'd appreciate you posting them.

BTS, I do not have any video of mine but I can guarantee you that a quad on tracks will go up any incline you have balls enough to do. They will go over backwards before you run out of power. Just remember, using tracks, you now have a huge footprint of traction on the ground compared to the stock wheels that we are all used to using. The traction to wieght ratio with tracks is unbelievable. I haven't found any snow conditions or depth that slow them down. Your 700 would do great with them. The only thing I wish I had was power steering, they are hard to steer and near impossible when going slow. It's easy to bend your steering arm if you're not careful.

I am not sure about ATV tracks but the truck tracks have about 20% gear reduction when you bolt the tracks on. You don't run out of power to pull hills. I like everything about them except steering.
Re: my debate.... atv trax or sled
Like full cry said if you have the balls to climb it they will. They are hard to turn but I like mine. I can leave the house in the dirt and ride to the snow but it does like gas. Havent rode my sled since. JMO
