Show me a dog that is 100% broke and I will show you a dog that is either dead or never gets hunted. Have seen plenty of well broke dogs trash. It happens.
IMO what seperates a well broke dog from a trashy one is the time frame between episodes.

IMHO I don't think there's a such thing as a 100% broke dog. The first trip out for me is always a wreck . And after that there's no more problems. Until I'm going out with someone and say I've only had one wreck this year then the dogs go crazy and have more fun chasing deer, elk, coyotes and everything else that moves. Must be karma. Theres a bunch of guys around here that say not to even start correcting a pup until after its chased trash a few time and has seen one or two lions. Thats just my opinion and the luck that I have had. I doubt I even helped any cause everything I just typed I'm sure has been said on here more than once.

The best hounds I have ever seen have been trashy S.O.B.'s and took some serious heat to get them off of trash, but with age and constant hunting and praise on the good stuff they turned out to be some seriously awesome hounds..... I would NEVER say a dog is completely trash broke cause as soon as you say that you often find yourself eating your words.

Dewey , you are 100% correct . Trash breaking to me is just as important to as training them to hunt preferred game . As far as siccing them on game i never say nothing to the dog to encourage them to hunt , should'nt have to . I live in a farming community where we are surrounded with all types of game .Also being a trapper i catch the game i don't what my dogs running and set up tempting situations for them . I also spotlight and dump my dogs on trash to see what they will do . It works . I've been out with my buddies whose dogs took off after deer , fox red and gray's get in porkipines and my dogs never got involved . I'm not trying to sound like an Ike but if you work hard at trashbreaking you'll be amazed at the results . You also should be able to tell what you dog is running just by how their running it .

I never met a houndsman yet that either his dogs or himself weren't a little trashy. To find a trash broke man with a pack of trash broke hounds would be a miracle.

if a houndsman has a hound that just quits and comes out ,and gives you that look like im not going to get in trouble with the rest of them every time it goes bad . i would say you have one . i have had one she was a black n tan female. one of those kind that just does not want to dissapoint . she was also the house dog which i think played a big factor. i could also call her off the tree if she treed next to someones house . she was a stayput treedog unless i said otherwise . i could also leave a steak dinner on the coffee table and take off for the day and come back to it still sitting there. on the floor was fairgame . anything above was off limits .the strain of hounds i run now need reminders especially at the beggining of a season . the closest i got to my black n tan to being broke is old joe a 14 year old treeing walker since ive had him he has run 6 coon which he dissapeared when i got to the tree that the young dogs were at . two porcupines two days in a row which i never figured out what got into him .just gave him a sapling adjustment. the rest of the time this dog has run bear only . the fact that he just absolutely wants a bear and hates em and wants to eat their meat makes him stick to them i think .

Retired ' no wonder you probably run around chasing trash runners , you don't pay attention . There was a question about dogs being 100% broke and i put my two cents in , then just because you apparently lack the desire to train a dog from trashing you assume that it has to be impossible to have one so you come back disrespecting me . Your running around with night champions and world champion dogs that will still run a deer , that ought to tell you about the caliber of training that dog got . 'How many times were they scratched for running junk before they made champions ? If you got an opinion about this subject matter fine then post it but personal smart ass remarks make you look as stupid as you friggin muts must be .

Here's my story.....

I got a pup last winter from Ken Duncan. At a little over 4 months on opening day of cat season we cut a smoking hot cat track and dumped the box, including the pup. Half the pack trashed off, the other half treed a little tom, pup included. the rest of the season, if a trash race erupted, the pup would come back. I thought "must have been started right". I convinced my self that he was perfect.

Last May I was out coon hunting him with a buddy and a dog of his. Heard the pup fire off up ahead of us. Opened my yap and said "listen to him go". Watched him on the garmin really stretchin out his legs and mouth and keep on trucking right across the river! Looked down and noticed my buddies dog at our feet. DAMN IT! Lesson number one.

Been clean since. Last night I was out with the pup and my female. Was working up the creek bottom into the wind and noticed them pick up thier heads and test the wind. He opened and I flashed the spotlight across the creek and up a ways to see several deer leaving the scene. I let him get really "comitted" and let the tritronics rip. We'll see what tonight brings

Scott, you sorta hit it on the head alot of seasoned dogs if put down on the track are pretty honest for the most part but once a person starts free casting dogs that puts them to the test and yes some are pretty dang staight but NEVER SAY NEVER. Also another tip never brag on how good your snowmobile or chain saw start it will bite you in the butt also!   later, Andy

it's weird how that works. I had two pups that in their first 3 years never saw a thing but out of the box and straight to the tree. I thought that at that point if they hadn't showed interest in deer and elk they never would. So I started braggin em up. it only took once when some younger pups ripped out on a trash race. those two dogs are still trashy and have been way harder to break than trashy young dogs that I have broke at a young age. the pisser of it is with them, when they trash, they know they're doin wrong so they won't come back for a couple days. I try to shock them off, but 90% of the time they are on the right game so I hesitate and they get out of range. they catch enough game for me to let a few trash races slide, and they don't leave lions to trash, but dam I wish I could breakem. if I let em go and there isn't a track they will find one, usually hoofs! maybe this will be my year. their mom has chased a few deer and elk in her day, but now she is 99.9% broke    that's good enough for me.

slowandeasy ,you started out saying you try to learn more with you eyes and ears then your mouth well you should have took your own advice , you just try to stir up shit just like your first post indicated that you knew what this subject would bring for your entertainment . I'm not bragging at all , just telling how i do my trash breaking . Why don't you try to be more constructive and tell us how you break your dogs off trash . Your just like ike with the lion rigging post you knew that it would stir up some shit , so i'm stirring the pot , if you want to take this over to the cage meet you there . So i'll be anxious for you to tell us how you do your trashbreaking , and by the way i never said or indicated i was smarter or better then anyone on here except YOU and Retired , theres alot of topnotch guys on here that state their views and move on without being a little bitch about it . So lets here how a little bitch breaks his dogs off trash if you even have any .
