Dogs constantly mounting one specific dog.

Post by bigboarstopper »

I was hunting one of my young male uncut starter dogs and he kept mounting another cut male belonging to my hunting partner. He has only been on a few hunts and he is still relatively young so im not too concerned at this point. Im sure im going to cut his nuts anyhow so this problem should fix itself.

I just learned that the cut male he has been mounting has been given the same treatment by numerous other veteran dogs from other guys dogs. Its gotten to the point where its become a huge distraction. Whenever my hunting partner takes this cut male its practically a gang bang. I dont expect my young starter dog to be on perfect behavior but it seems this male of my partners is turning some veteran dogs over to the dark side. I have never seen this before. I can understand if the male dogs are distracted by a female in heat but this isnt something ive seen before. What gives?

I would say it is a sign of dominance. I have always hunted mainly females with only one or two males. I had a couple females that would mark over where other dogs peed. Who knows why animals do what they do and why. When reading your post the one thing it reminded me of was a bunch of steers. :?
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!

I've seen this happen I think you will find the cut dog doesnt have the right smell for a male so the others think if he doesnt smell like a male, then it must be a female so......

Just a theory

I have seen this many times in a feedlot with steers. They are called Bullers. Once the others start riding them....its down hill. They would get all the hair rubbed off on their back and would get big sores from getting mounted all the time. They would loose weight because the others would never give them any rest at the feed bunk. We would pull them out of the pen from normal cattle, and stick them in a Buller pen with each other.

Sounds like you guys might have to be selective about what dogs are going to be around the buller hound, if you guys keep him.

I'm running 5 males right now, only one is uncut. Never seen any of them mount another dog. I'd say stevemac may have the answer, he probably doesn't have the right smell for a male? Not sure but maybe someone else has some more info.

For years my lead dog was a cut male. In "his" pack, all the other dogs knew better than to try to mount him. Whenever a different dog was thrown into the mix, and especially a male, about 80% of the time the new dog would try to mount him. My dog, being the lead dog, didn't tolerate this behavior, but at times, the other dogs would persist. At that time, just to keep things in order, I would put a stop to the new dog's actions. I always believed that the problem was as stevemac suggested, and without testicles, there is no hint of testosterone, and therefore, in a dog's mind, why not? In the world of pack animals, it's always about hierarchy, and therefore, dominance.

This is something I just thought about and may be worth a try. I thought it was about the dominance thing also but I have a cut male and hunt with a large group of other dogs and never seen another dog try to ride him. If this is about the lack of smell why not try some of that spray that you put on a female when they are coming in or going out of heat? Maybe some Vicks salve on his rear before hunting him the next time? Worth a try and not expensive to try.

The males that are humping him are leaving behind scent from their "junk" which the other males smell. This signals to them that this is something to hump so they do so... and leave more scent, which gets stronger and attacks more males. Hence the gang bang. The humpee was probably being mounted in a show of dominance at first. But as he’s gotten "smelly" over the year’s, males are mounting him because they smell all the other males that have humped him. I would image this is the same with the steers.

stevemac is correct, i picked up two cut males this spring and when i entroduced them to the dogs i hunt with both mine and those of friends it started out like a national hump fest. them two poor dogs were getting it from all sides... it soon went away and they have been able to hunt as would normally be expected. i talked to the vet about this behavior and he said it was simple putting a neautered dog with dogs that have never seen one was about like a gay guy coming out of the closet in a society that had never heard of such behavior. they donot smell ike a male yet not like a female so therefore everydody has to see where they stand with this new "gender" of dog
never doubt the dogs

Seems that the dog that was continually being mounted is suffering from a massive bladder infection. The vet said that the dogs may be mounting him because of it. My partner is currently medicating this dog and Im curious as to wether this infection has thrown off an unsual scent thats confusing the other dogs. I will find out this weekend.
