feeding dogs raw chicken
The topic of feeding dogs wild pork got me thinking of a practice that some other hunters use. The feeding of raw chicken when a dog falls ill, is laid up from injury or is about to go on a marathon hunt. I have seen some bad results from this and I was curious if anybody else does this. I know when my dogs are hurt, ill or about to hunt hard over a long weekend I will sometimes feed cooked chicken with rice if the budget allows but as for feeding raw im curious to see if anybody else does this?

Re: feeding dogs raw chicken
I am planning on starting feeding my dogs a raw food diet (which will include chicken) From the research I have done the only problem dogs can have from the raw is when they already have a compromised immune system. So I would guess the bad results from the raw chicken when already ill is the reason. But if they were already used to it I don't think they would have any problems. Also when first started on raw they can have diarria (sp) so just something to think about before trowing dogs a chicken before heading out for that big hunt. Once used to it wouldn't be an issue. I am by far no expert so take this for what it's worth .

I used to have some chickens hanging around here to keep the bugs at bay. Hound pups and chickens don't make a very healthy mix for the chickens.
I'm sure that you are probably talking about processed chickens? A pup that got very good at catching and eating those raw chickens died from a bone or feather puncturing her intestines. I haven't replaced the chickens, and the pups that have been raised here since, haven't died from raw chicken disease.

Chicken is about all I feed my dogs.
In the chicken batteries there are always weak, small, deformed or ill chicken that must be culled. I place a large freezer there and collect when full - the feathers are pulled, head and feet removed, and then each dog gets a whole bird. This makes about 20% of their feed.
70 % is the raw stomach contents - mainly intestines which I collect for free from the abattoir.
The remainder is a low grade pellet for fibre and other minerals and vitamins.
All the fat keeps the dogs in great shape.

Raw chicekn is one of the best and cheapest meats you can feed your dogs. Do it and do it often and you will be very happy.

Raw UNCOOKED chicken is good. However, do not feed any cooked chicken bones, those are the ones that will cause problems.

Dan E is right on.

Yep, raw chicken, bones and all is a very good thing, especially for extremely poor dogs. The wife ran a dog pound for many years. Whenever she took in severe neglect cases the dogs went on a raw chicken and pumkin pie filler diet. Dogs I swore would die of starvation rebounded shockingly fast on that diet.
When I need to build a dog back up, maybe after being lost on the mountain etc. it is raw chicken and pumpkin filler to the rescue. It is the cooked chicken bones that cause harm.

Feeding dogs raw chicken? i don't see any apparent problems when it comes with this one. However, just be careful when it regards with the small bone part such as chicken wings because there is a tendency it can get stock with throat of your dogs.Just always bear in mind that the bones are bigger then the dog mouth, that way their far less likely to get stuck.Raw bones are a good source of calcium and as a general rule far less likely to get stuck.
