Very timmid plott
I got some pups they are not all from the same litter. I have one plott dog that is very timmid he is around 4 months and is just skidish when it comes to people. but he loves the other dogs. my other pups around the same age are doin great with little drags and caged coons, but that plott dog is not so i was wondering if it was to early to cull him or give him more time. And is there any thing i can do to break this? Thanks
Re: Very timmid plott
Does the pup shy away from you or strangers? either way its all what you are willing to put with IMO, good and bad both ways, a shy dog wont get caught and stolen by strangers but if they are extremely shy you have to be aware of the possibility of fear biting,( strangers, kids, vet, ect) timid ones are easier to control with body lanuage& tone of voice, timid towards people does not equal timid towards game, I have a super shy B&T female, I didnt even get to pet her till a year old but I kept her, she still is shy to people but loves my wife and I and is downright buggy for attn. she hunts real good (to me) and when something gets bayed up its not long for this world when she shows up, the others bay it up and she takes care of business pronto! one of these days that little trait will be her undoing, But to meet her at the house you would think what a gutless wonder, as far as culling a 4mo pup I say dont get in such a hurry, thats awful young to know much yet, lotsa woods time seemed to help mine, didnt cure it but it helped, couple times my buddy got to pet her cause she was so excited to be hunting that she forgot she was shy for a couple minutes
good luck to you in this nutty sport, Ken

i am no expert, but at 4 months it is top early to determine wether to cull him. i bought a bluetick a while back that was like that, he was a year old. i just started spending alot of time with him and giving him more attentoin than the rest of my dogs. now he is fastly becomeing one of my better dogs, he made a total turn arround. dont count him out yet. but like i said i am no expert, just stateing my personal experences.
Re: Very timmid plott
if you dont cull them at least fix them so they dont reproduce . its a trait you dont want passed on . yes they can still become a hunter . bring the pup in the house and socialize it . my first hound was this type dog . i had to gun break her ,socialize her, and put about twice as much effort into her to make her a mediocre coonhound . i was young and it was my first hound . she taught me alot about training ,but also what not to look for in a dog . i know this is kind of a mixed message , but the reality is not all people cull when they should . its for you to decide!

Good point kordog, one I failed to mention, he is correct huntfish8 I should have mentioned the extra work and yep she is spayed, Ken
Re: Very timmid plott
kordog is right, i have put in about twice the time with the particular dog that i mentioned, but it is turning in to one hell of a hound and when he changed it was like you flipped a light switch, he is nothing like he was, but you have to decide whether you want to invest the extra time and effort or just start out with a dog that is easier to deal with. at 4 months the dogs really havnt matured enough to really know how they are going to be. JMO.

You may, without realizing it, be pressuring the pup to do things it is just not mature enough for. Just let it be for 2-3 months. Just let it eat, sleep, exercise some and be petted. Dogs are like people in that they mature at different levels and ages. Many puppies have been ruined due to their owner's impatience.

Id give it more time. I got 2 pups thats 6 months old(litter mates) and 1 of them was shy from the time I got her at 7 weeks old. She was still shy up till about a month ago and I bout got it worked out of her. Just been giving her a little extra attention from time to time and it seems to be paying off.
Re: Very timmid plott
I got a dog that was skiddish from a guy. I actually had to beg the man to not shoot him. I'd been beating the bushes following this plott dog all day. He hunted damn hard and tried his best to catch the hog he jumped. There was just something about him that I liked. When I was coming out he caught up with me and when we got to the owner he leashed him and then because he didn't want to load he shook a leafy branch in his face. I never saw this man hit the dog. The dog was very timid on the lead. Any other time he hunted his heart out. Now, with alittle patience and work he leads great. He doesn't like to be leashed with "pullers" and bucks up sometimes but, if you notice little things like this and do your best to fix problems before they arise it's much better on everyone. I simply leash him with another dog that doesn't pull. This plott hound is now my lead dog. I wouldn't cull him at 4 months. Just be patient and work with him alittle. Give him alittle more of a chance.
