Thats kind of an open question. There are a lot of factors that come into what type of set you should use.

If they are near a fence line use snares. If not your best bet is a bait set with #2.

It's all a matter of personal preferance. I only say this because I've been along with several guys that were much better at trapping coyotes than myself and every one of them had a favorite set that seemed to produce the most for them and everyone had a different favorite type of set. With that said from all that i've been around everyone agrees a coyote will almost "always" try to get a free meal and if not he/she will urinate somewhere close by. So I try to make one set that offers food and another for sexual, territory,or maybe just curiousity fairly close together. But trapping is like all other activities, if you don't get out and try you're guaranteed to fail so try many types of sets and whatever works stick with and move on from there.

If a #2 is good, then a #4 or 4 1/2 should be that much better. I myself like a flat set with at least a #3, a little gland and pee, and snap, you have a yote bouncing on the end of a chain. Well sometimes, if they are old and starving, young and stupid, or have an extra chromosome or two.

jkcasey, I must agree. I too like a #3 for both coyotes and cat. Mine are full modified bridgers but I'm going to get some MB650's. I would also go with the gland and urine, seems do work quite well around here. I like to change things up though. I'll put a flat set and dirt hole set within twenty yards of eachother most of the time. If they don't like one maybe the other will get them.

The key is setting the traps where there are coyotes. Even the best set won't catch if a coyote doesn't walk by. I also set up wind, let the wind blow that scent to them will help alot. I'd go to www.trapperman.com and look around there. They have a display of all the sets and how to construct them. Good luck!
