digging

Any good suggestions for digging? I need to eventually fence and secure several acres, so my problem is a little bigger than a kennel floor.

Hog panels under gravel at the border, fence on top of your choice. Done and virtually permanant. Real permanent....burried concrete sub wall. Gravel and buried hog panels can be easily moved, altered or adjusted. Any sort of lighter "wire" rusts through in a few seasons, waiste of time IMO......

I just buried cinder blocks around the inside edge of the kennel I had some laying around and it worked good for me

The guys gave some good idea's. From my experience, their always digging in a kennel, but in bigger area's, like my three acre pen, no problems.

For huge areas concrete wire is cheaper by the roll and works, but depending on the enviroment rusts out in a few seasons even covered in gravel. Heavy galvanised hog panels can be split in half and last longer than most houndsmen, but are expensive....whats you dogs and peace of mind worth......

When I used kennels, it was always a problem keeping the dogs from digging out of the kennels with dirt floors. I switched to a completely different setup 12 years ago and no more issues. I fenced in an area about one acre in size and all the dogs are in there togther all the time. Digging stopped, barking stopped and all health and fitness issues went away also.

i have a dirt kennal and i poored a 6 inch stip concreat around the fence of the kennal stopped all digging out

put a hot wire around the interior/bottom of the pen and they should learn pretty fast how to stay away from the fence.

Sorry for the late reply, cougarhound. It is indeed only one hound that digs, but he's a determined critter when he wants out. ...or in. He used to tag team with my pygmy goats working the back fence line. They'd smash and he'd dig. Finally got rid of the goats but kinda like the hound, he's generally really willing to please, but is prone to wanderlust if left at home. He's been calming down and sticking around though as he gets older. We seem to have come to an understanding somehow.

But it's the next generation I'm starting to worry about next.

I really like the fenced acre idea. I have one to use that could be ideal with properly improved fencing. I might need a wall on one side to prevent fence barking at the border with the neighbors on one side though.

schnell, my grandfather taught me a trick long ago and has worked with every dog, the hole the dog digs fill with water, then push his or hers face in the hole with water then a few smacks and scold, only a couple times and they stop.

I always put their crap in the holes, they do stop diggin those holes, it does not stop them from digging elsewhere. It is also good way to get rid of the crap.

my bird dogs would be grateful they didnt have to scavenge the yard for piles. They'd just dig more
