if you breed 2 dogs from a diff breed like a black n tan and a walker you are going to have some pups come b n t looking and some walker looking. my question is do you think the black n tan looking pups have more of the black n tan traits such as build , brains ect. or do you think they could have the walker brain ,build ect. give me your thoughts.

Its kind of like the plotts I breed. I have a red brindle male and the pups that come out red brindle have been nearly identical to him in almost everyway. I have a near solid black female and brindled black female and the pups that come out looking like mama are pretty close to becoming twins of thier mom, and the others seem to be nice blends of both parents.

Color is just that color. It would just mean the genes recieved for that color showed up for those pups. Now in a line breeding if a pup looks just like pappa or momma then yes they may have gotten more of what makes momma or pappa tick. But the truth is color is just color.

actually color is gene expression, it maybe linked to total gene expression of just that of color. It is more likely if the the color gene is expressed the rest of the targeted genes will also be expressed than the opposite to occur.

First crossbred litter I raised.. They are all blueticked.. But seeing the one I hunted around and reports I have gotten back.. The majority of these pups picked up the traits from the walker side.. They got, some of them, the bluetick mouth, but hunting style, speed, brain, etc, did for sure come from the Walker side..

Only litter I've tried.. The only other crossbred I had.. I never hunted with his momma... so I couldn't tell you.. I know he had a lot of his sires traits.. but in all fairness, I just don't know without hunting with both sides...

It doesn't have to be cross bred litters to get pups to mirror one parent. That is why most breeders will only breed proven dogs because when i cross mine i want that hybrid dog that displays all the desired traits i want but will still be satisfied with an exact duplicate of either parent

No it doesn't.. But since that was what he asked.. that is what I went for..

I do know a couple families of dogs that even outcrossed, the majority of pups pick up that one family..

I'm not into cross breeds, but I do know from my experiance of some of my linebred dogs, that color has something to do with it.

One trait that seems to show up a lot in this line of Walkers, is white faces. Just about every one of them could be the clone to the other, in the way they hunt and sound. I did an outcross breeding, trying to get a pup off a male before he died. She had 5, and one had the white face. He is just like his father. The others, that were marked similar to mom, are a lot more like her. A couple of them seem to be that perfect combo, and got traits from both sides.

lets take it a step further and get opinions on when the color resembles neither parent? Old recessive genes popping up from back down the line.

funny you should mention that larry. I have been crossing bluetic/ walkers(line bred 100%) they always come out white and black or staight b tick lookin pups. about ten years into it I have a black and tan and a kinda black hinted redbone in the same litter. wtf???? these dogs are not in a situation where a strange dog could have got ahold of them either. I damn near scratched a bald spot on my head trying to figure that one out.

This interests me, I have a couple pups left out of the litter I had out of my female and Topper Again. One is a clone of her mother and the other one looks a lot like Topper. I've never hunted with the Topper dog, but the clone of her mother acts just like her down to the littlest things. Her sound, posture, hard head, and the list goes on and on. Makes me wonder what the male pup will act like. Guess time will tell.

I think the topic would be more difficult in dominate colors, like bt or plotts to understand how things may work. But in my opinion color is a big factor of genes, traits, etc, and the outcome of the pups to their parents or family of dogs. As an example, my red and white male throws red and white, no brainer good pups that will be top cold trailers, rig, fast gritty, etc, like their dad. Reds, the same thing. Black and white's, will be fine dogs, may rig, will start a little slower, but usually by nine months but end result, both colors, will be nice dogs in the end, and have the qualities one needs to catch game. Just a little different style. I raised and finished one litter and this was my conclusion, I made a cross again, 3 black and whites, 3 red and whites, all males, they are three weeks old, it will be interesting to see if this hold true again, as my last experience

color and traits go linked, like in the female cat, The term tortoiseshell cat refers to a coloration pattern caused by a specific genetic trait. It is not a specific breed of cat.

and this happens in dogs too. Some traits go hardly linked to colors.

Interesting conversations. Hybrid vigor is something to breed for, as far as the cross some traits maybe related to color[ may]. you could get dogs like either parent or a mixture of both. The only way to tell is to raise them all or enough to see. That is what I like to do with crossing running dogs with tree dogs. I want to get the best of both worlds. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. If it works I will make that cross again and again. It is far easier to get a consistent dog line breeding or breeding like to like. When you get a cross that works it can be outstanding for what I do, then I will try line breeding. Some of the old timers[ older than me] Charlie Tant, Lyons and most of the old lion hunters when they got what they wanted would line breed three times then out cross. It would take most of a life time to make a strain of dogs and they would be hard to get. If traits go with color I don't know. We all have our color prejudice. I look for colors and will like that dog better because of the color. I will over look some pups totally because of color { bluetick] and I have seen some good blueticks. Dewey
