Not sure what you dog died of, but I'd bet against kennel cough. The times I've seen it, it's not a wheezing they do but just cough type. Wheezing suggest to me that something else was going on. Had the dog been on a rough bear or cat recently? I've seen it before where a dog only has a hole or two and it doesn't look real bad, but the hole is in a bad spot in the rib cavity or such. The hide on the dog slides over the hole that goes into rib cavity and you don't even know it's there. Any time we get a dog that gets a hole in a bad spot, we look it over extra carefull and if it goes deeper the dog needs to be brought in to be checked out.
I'm not sure if you've had good luck with your vet in the past, but I'd check around for another one. Ask hound guys in the area who is the best and also who is the cheapest. It might not be the same guy. Bring them in for minor stuff to the cheap guy and in to the best guy when there is a possibility of being major.

Really sorry to hear about your dog.. It's never easy to lose a good hound.
As far as the mystery.. were there any other symptoms? Did she have any blood in the urine or diarhea?
